Great Lakes Sailing - Welland Canal HD time-lapse - YouTube This is a Time Lapse trip down the Welland Canal from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario on a full size Laker 740' long with a 78' beam. You will notice when ship enters lock it slides along the concrete wall which has oak timbers attached, this is the only way a ship that is 78' wide can enter a lock thats is 80' wide. The ship drops 325' as it tranist down the canal to Lake Ontario.
I betting each of us are humbled by this video. If the squeeze was any tighter, a lubricant would be needed.

Welland Canal Timelapse No they do not use tug for assistance to navigate the canal except somtimes in winter when ice is to heavy. It takes a laker 10 - 12 hours to transit the 27 mile canal. The attached picture will give you a good idea how tight it is. Rodger St. Amand
