Mornin' guys! Just finished a tour of Thunderbolt Marina in Savannah, GA, where I had the pleasure of seeing several notables including two Bloemsma & vanBreeman builds - "Flying Eagle" and "Griffioen". Also in the yard: the Perini "Independence" and Burger's "Top Times", among others. Sorry, no pictures were allowed in the yard, but I managed to peer over a pier from another marina and snap off the pics below. The first is the outer docks of Thunderbolt and I didn't get the name of the marina in the 2nd pic. Wrapping up a real estate witch hunt and heading back down the highway today...
Hey Carl, I know you were heading north over the weekend, just not that far north. Been by the old PJ yard couple of times. I like the signature shape of the sheds. Stayed near there once, by Blue something marina, over by the bridge. Safe travels. See you when you return. Capt Tom
Mornin' Tom, I actually traveled a little further north; into the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, including western South Carolina and northeast Georgia. On my return trip, I came down along the coast of Georgia. Have to tell ya… I covered more terrain than an airplane, which was the reason for the trek. For way too long, I’ve had dillusions of building a plane, which is usually shattered by the reality of my checkbook. Still, I like the idea of a super-size garage and a backyard that’s over 3000 feet long. So… I’m doing my homework in preparation of real estate’s “so-called” soft landing. For anyone interested, I visited the following airparks… Aero Acres – Port St. Lucie, Florida Massey Air Ranch – Edgewater, Florida Spruce-Creek Fly-In – Daytona, Florida Eagles Nest Aerodrome – Crescent City, Florida Cannon Creek Airpark, Lake City, Florida Williamsport Airpark – Easley, South Carolina Heaven’s Landing – Clayton, Georgia Of the airparks I toured, Heaven’s Landing in North Georgia is as close as you’ll get to the pearly gates… both in beauty and altitude. But… it’s pricey and there’s not much to do up yonder. In contrast, Spruce Creek Fly-In is the aviation equivalent to Disney World! The last time I saw this many airheads in one place… I was ordering wings from waitresses in orange shorts. Normally when I return from a trip, there’s a “good to be home” feeling. But after driving Carolina’s swooping streets, shaded by mile-high trees and noticeably void of cookie-cutters… Florida seems like a rather long, flat slab of cement now. OK… time to get my head out of the clouds and my feet back in the water.
Hey Carl, Maybe you can get a fly-in neighborhood in Central FL and live next to John Travolta. I'm in Charlotte right now, for a little work tomorrow but a couple of NASCAR races Friday and Saturday. Weather is nice and cool, and will be downright cold this weekend (down to the 50's-60's, and that's cold for us Floridians). Maybe it's time to be a half-back (that is when New Yorkers who move to Florida, don't like it, and move half-way back, to NC or Virginia). Capt Tom
Travolta is based out of Jumbolair Estates in Ocala, not far from my sister's house. I believe the airpark is owned by the widow of the man who invented Nautilus exercise equipment. She was quite young at the time and he was quite the opposite. I used to resent guys like this, but now that I'm getting older, I'm beginning to appreciate them. Ocala is a little too central Florida for my taste, as I've been living among future half-backers for so long. Have to admit, after serving a 10 year sentence in Boca, the thought of rednecks flying rebel flags and spitting Skoal out the window doesn't seem so bad. Enjoy that Charlotte weather. Wish I was there too. Although I'll pass on watching cars go around in circles. Just wake me up for a good crash.
