The Emms Passage of the cruiseship Norwegian Pearl apparently indirectly responsible for the Europe eclectric shutdown. More here...http://www.travelserver.net/travelpage/ubb-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=11&t=000539
The U.S. press had little more to add as to the cause, Yachtluver, but here's something of interest: Some years ago, a stretched 65 Irwin with a taller-than-stock rig motored up Fort Lauderdale's New River. Around the 7th Street area are some high-tension powerlines. Wrong tide, bad luck, who knows--the lines arced to the masthead and thirdhand reports had at least one crew member blown overboard, anchors welded to the pulpit, a mess. I paid particular attention to this as I was trying to organize the transit of a 78' Cheoy Lee motorsailer up this same stretch of the river a couple of years ago and subsequent to the earlier incident. The Florida Power & Light engineer I spoke with mentioned that in hot weather, the power cables sag a bit, so there was no exact height he could supply. He did mention that if a metal object, i.e., a masthead came within roughly eight feet of the line, an arcing situation could occur. We ended up hiring surveyors to map out the catenary of the cable, timed the low tide within minutes, crossed fingers, tightened sphincters, and went for it. Wonder if "Norwegian Pearl" popped a fuse somewhere, hm?
No, Loren, according to what i read it seems that they shut down a portion of electricity to allow for the passage of the Pearl but some how the indtending small purposeful outage triggered an almost European continental wide failiure in their power grid. I may be subject to correction but that is the jist i got when i read the posts and from the website.
Well that is good for you but from many other people i heard from, the outtage affected alot of areas...so i guess you were one of the lucky ones that escaped through the cracks.
Well, if you do want to know, the Norwegian Pearl has 'safely' made it out into open water to do her sea trials and tests. She started yesterday and will go on up untill the 17th? i think...i'm not too sure about the last date though.
