That is something, what a momentous occasion for the crew of "Maiken" to be the discovery ship of this new land. Now, if you could only buy it today, and who knows in 100 Million years you could own something akin to Australia.
I wonder if all that rock sandblasted the hull clean? Actually, it is amazing to see an island born like that. It goes to show the talents of mother nature but also that our little space ship called earth is ever-changing, and many times, we can't do anything about it.
If you are the first to set foot on "new land" in international waters, Can you plant a flag made from bed sheets and a pole with your newly hand drawn flag and family crest ,then claim the Land as yours????? Since you were first to run a ground on it ?????
I don't know about the legal implications. But I definitely wouldn't just call it Newfoundland...?! Whatever, it'll probably be some time before the place becomes habitable - with the requisite barrier reef and coconut trees etc. though we could skip the head-hunting and cannibalism this time round surely...huh?!
This was a couple of Swedish guys (of course) and if you scroll down a little on their blog you have it in their own words; http://yacht-maiken.blogspot.com/2006_08_01_yacht-maiken_archive.html
