So you thought Ernesto was a southern storm? Last Saturday, we clocked a little over 60mph winds at our marina. The only damage I has was my US and Bahamian flags were tattered. BIG trees are still blocking many roads. Our power came back on yesterday. I am the "storm committee chairman" at our marina & I called our plan into action Friday morning. We had dozens of people taking down biminis, dodgers, auto furl sails, moving the small boats out & quadroople tying the big ones. Long Island Sound was ugly & I hear many moored boats are now across the sound on the rocks. Many more are simply gone & probably sunk out in the storm. Here are a few pictures from Greenwich Harbor
CTDave, Ernesto was a worse-than-expected storm for you folks up there. Winds were attributed to not only Ernesto, but a pressure gradient with a front that came down from Canada, and it just compounded the problem. Either way, you guys took it on the chin, and by the looks of your photos, was not a fun place to be. I have a client who keeps their boat moored in Little Neck Bay. I'll have to call them and see how they made out. Glad to see you made out okay. Capt Tom
Dave... Much better a beached blow-boat... than a 50' Bertram! Glad you're OK. BTW... 60 mph winds... we call that a breeze. Welcome to our world!!!
Manhattan Wow! Greenwich looks bad. We battened down at Chelsea Piers and saw nothing more than a rain event really. We had 35kt winds as we were rounding the southern tip of the island transitioning from East River to Hudson, but nothing at the dock. I guess the buildings took the real sting out of it. BTW- CTDave- Why are you flying a Bahamian courtesy flag in Greenwich?
Because my fat, lazy ass hasn't crawled up the tower since down south LOL. Don't worry, the flag etiquette police can't tell what kind of flag it is now. Your in NYC? Coming up the LI Sound or headed back south?
Exactly what tried to explain to several people around the docks. After the third or fourth "deer in the headlights" look, I gave up.
A little off-topic (but not really)... the trickle down effect of these storms is just hitting Florida... Citizens to raise insurance rates dramatically, while private insurers are hitting homeowners with premiums that are 2-3 times higher... http://www.sun-sentinel.com/business/custom/consumer/sfl-ztakeout03sep03,0,3838326.story And the trickle down... public school enrollment drops for the first time in 35 years. People leaving the state... http://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/lo...sep06,0,969502.story?coll=sfla-home-headlines
We're headed up the Sound for Newport tomorrow. We will then be back in your neck of the woods for the J30 North Americans (another Forum altogether) in Westport on the weekend of the 14-17.
Okay Carl, you started it and had to mention the homeowners insurance fiasco. Insurance on my house last year was $3,200, for wind, not even flood. Just go the renewal notice, up to $6,900. OUCH! FLA is not the paradise it once was, of low cost of living, living in a trailer (all selling out to developers), cheap insurance, etc. Cost me as much to live here now as it did in NY three years ago. No doubt people are leaving. Capt Tom
