Glad we decided to do some things on the boat and head her south instead of north this year. Between the flooding and closures on the Erie and the manpower cutback on the Trent This wasn't the year to do it. Maybe we'll see you in the Spring coming from the other direction. BTW Rodger, There's a whole bunch of "Erie Canal" threads. Rather than start a new thread, if you went into Search and just tacked each post on one thread it'd probably give a good recent history or historical patterns that could prove useful. Just a thought.
Erie Canal Closed Erie Canal has been closed now for the last three days at locks 13-14, the word is it could be closed for another two weeks as a void was found under a pier.

The Erie Canal will open next week November 12/13 to December 2/13. I will be heading out from the Welland Canal next Wednesday going to the Viking Factory in New Jersey on a 74' Viking S/F . Real Time Canal Alerts ERIE CANAL - LOCK E-13 MOVEABLE DAM REPAIRS Mariners are advised that repairs to Lock E-13 Dam on the Erie Canal are projected to be completed on November 9. Water levels will be returned to normal, with this section re-opening on or before 7:00 am on Tuesday, November 12. The entire Oswego Canal and the eastern Erie Canal from Lock E-23 in Brewerton to Lock E-2 in Waterford, will remain open until 5:00 pm on Monday, December 2 - though all locks will be closed during the day on Thursday, November 28th. All other sections of the Canal System, including the Champlain, Cayuga-Seneca, and Erie Canal from Lock E-24 to Tonawanda, will close for the season at 5:00 pm on Friday, November 15.
Repairs were not successful on Lock 13. They are opening Erie Canal Sunday November 11/13 for only four days, to clear yachts that are waiting at marinas on the Erie Canal. My trip to the Viking plant will not happen this year because of the early closing of Lock 13. ERIE CANAL LOCK E-12 TO LOCK E-14 The Erie Canal between Lock E-12 and Lock E-14 will re-open to vessel traffic at 10:00 am on Sunday, November 10 - with a depth restriction of 7 feet - and remain open until 5:00 pm on Wednesday, November 13. This portion of the Canal System will close to all vessel traffic at that time and will not re-open until 2014. All other sections of the Canal System will close at 5:00 pm on Friday, November 15.
From bad to worse, Rodger. Do you know if there are waiting vessels that will be unable to meet that draft restriction? If so, what do you think they will then do?
I no of eight yachts that were waiting a few weeks in Brewerton and their drafts will be ok, but I took a 54' Sea Ray down the Welland Canal on Thursday and he was wind bound for two days at Port Weller Lake Ontario and left this morning for Oswego. The boat is going to New York then on a ship to Australia, the owner wanted it there by Christmas. Lake Ontario was still blowing this morning and if can not make it to Oswego today he will not have time to complete trip through Erie Canal so he will have to turn around and store it in Brewerton, the owner in Australia is not very happy. The only other option is out the sea way but not this time of year.
It might be a possibility to load it onto a freighter in Lake Ontario going to Australia or even Savannah. GA where it can be loaded on another freighter going to Australia.
The captain of the Sea Ray called me tonight, they left Port Weller at 06:00 today and arrived in Oswego around 13:00 and cleared customs and completed the Oswego Canal and arrived in Brewerton at 18:00 He had strong south winds on Lake Ontario so he ran close to shore. he will now make New York on time.
That's good for all involved. In a difficult situation at least they tried to make a window to help the stranded boats through. Now just hope things work well enough to make that happen without problems.
