Undersea comm fibre apparently being damaged by ships anchors. Just wondering if it's normal practice to check charts prior to dropping a hook? I don't even want to try and figure out what the potential liability tag would be for this sort of event if an individual vessel was shown to be responsible. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/7222536.stm
With a GPS this would be easy to avoid, but when I was looking into some of my charts, I didn´t find any international cables? Could they be considered a security issue and not charted? I once caught a military cable when dragging, of course not charted.
Thanks AMG. I remember seeing charts that were looked at very closely when a semi submersible rig was being moved and there were comm cables marked out. Perhaps the charts were not standard issue.
I had a questioned that I had wondered for a long time but had been unable to find the answer. I tried checking out that web site but still did not find the answer. I once was told that there is an underwater fuel pipe line running into Ft. Luaderdale to Port Everglades coming from the west end of Freeport Bahama island. I have always seen large tankers unloading fuel there at a long xtended dock out in the ocean. The story went that they built the pipe line so the tankers do not have to enter port everglades. I have looked on charts to see if anything was marked but did not see anything. Does any one know any thing about this?
Back in 2004, a company called Enron won approval for a proposal to lay a natural gas pipeline from Grand Bahama to Port Everglades to tie into the existing gas line in Broward County (FLL). As there were environmental concerns, I don't believe it went anywhere. Just another pipedream.
5 cables cut and counting,... ...., and this time not the result of a ship's anchor cutting the cable: http://www.arabianbusiness.com/510132-internet-problems-continue-with-fourth-cable-break?ln=en http://blogs.zdnet.com/threatchaos/?p=525 Fifth: http://www.albawaba.com/en/countries/UAE/221875 Excerpt.../"A total of five cables being operated by two submarine cable operators have been damaged with a fault in each. Hmmm. Not a ship's anchor. No seismic activity noted in the area. The Loch Ness Lobster did it. And who said that regular flossing was such a good idea?
I don't think it that part of the world it would have been the Loch Ness Monster more likely Scylla or Charybdis.
Jeez! Talk about a speculative whirlwind. Hopefully when the repairs are made the cause will be determined.
