This short video is the Paul R Tregurtha Great Lakes Freighter 1000' long by100' wide doing a full stop as she was crushing full speed ahead in Lake Huron.

That ship sure didn't like doing that. 8 minutes / 7/10 of a mile to make a full stop. Anybody want to push their right of way in front of a big boat?

Yeah that was a lot of shake rattle and roll. Bet the engineers were just standing there waiting for their babies to come apart.......

I'll bet for the next few days they were checking every weld and every connection.

I wonder, just how much abuse were the prop blades taking.
Is there any destructive cavitation accruing?
    Shaft couplers need re-inspecting?

I am impressed she stopped in .7 mile.

Now you can understand why that ship was stuck hard in the bank of the Suez Canal
Probaly only doing 6 or 8 knots

I was impressed and surprised by that .7 miles also. Would have expected more like 1.5 mile. Also depends on the current though. Remember that ship that crashed in New Orleans some years back? I think that crashed through close to a mile of pier before it stopped, not to mention the amount of river it covered.

Was she empty or full load? Would make a huge difference.

The Paul R Tregurath holds 68,200 tons of cargo - 124,000 gallons fuel - 88,000 gallons water
she is 1000' long 100' wide
There are ten of these 1000' Lakers in the Great Lakes that are to big for the Welland Canal.
The Welland Canal can hold a ship 740/ long 80, wide and carry 25,000 tons
It takes 300 railway box cars or 750 transport trucks to fill up a ship that uses the Welland Canal and pays $ 23,000 in tolls.
So the Paul R Tregratha will carry almost two thirds more. Draft for Welland Canal is 26.6 '
