  1. Cheoy Lee Global 103' Pilothouse Motoryacht
    Downsizing Without Downgrading

    By Kevin Heistermann

The reality of the global economic downturn hasn't slowed down Cheoy Lee. Beginning in January of 2010 and through the coming summer, they will have sold 5 or 6 new yachts. Instead of battening down the hatches to weather the economic storm, they've taken the opportunity to develop a number of new vessels including the Bravo 88 - already under construction - as well as the Global 103 shown below.

The concept of the Global 103 came from Marty Isenberg of Cheoy Lee North America. He approached Mike Burvenich of MG Burvenich Yacht Design, asking him to come up with a concept for Cheoy Lee's next generation of mid-size motoryacht, a vessel that would succeed the very successful 95/100 series of motoryachts. Burvenich and the team at Cheoy Lee took all the comments they'd received over the years for yachts of this size and out of that came the Global 103' Pilothouse. The noticeable trend over the last few years was that many people were downsizing from larger yachts to smaller, more economical yachts. What Burvenich and Cheoy Lee came up with was a design that offers owners of larger yachts a smaller vessel that gives up none of what they had grown accustomed to... except the higher costs associated with the operating of a larger yacht.

Below decks, the Global 103 is offered with two different arrangements: one version has four staterooms each with a walk around queen berth and their own in suite head, while the other has a large VIP with an optional his & her head and two other staterooms each with a walk around queen berth and their own heads. Either arrangement has a large foyer area with natural light, a washer and dryer, as well as room for a small refrigerator and ice maker to serve the lower guest cabins.

Crew accommodations are located aft of the engine room. Access to these quarters is either through the transom or engine room, and in addition there is a stairwell accessing the side deck from the crew quarters similar to what was done on the 95/100 series of motoryachts. There are several different layout options for the crew quarters. Some have a crew lounge in the crew area, while others plan to use the large galley to act as the crew lounge and utilize the space normally used as the crew lounge to add more crew accommodations. Having the crew access door on the port side deck allows the crew to go from the crew quarters to the galley without having to ever enter the main guest area.

The Skylounge level contains the pilothouse and Portuguese bridge in which the foredeck can be accessed. On either side of the walkway to the foredeck there are built in sun pads. The sky lounge is full beam and has its own day head. Aft of the sky lounge is the prime outdoor area for guests that seek the sun. A hot tub is optional, but available. The davit is aft and the tender is stored athwart ships.

The foundation of the Global 103 is a hull design based on the proven 95/100 hull which has not only been extensively tank tested but also has countless hours of real usage in all sorts of sea conditions. The hull is designed to provide a comfortable cruise in the low to mid 20-knot range with a top end speed in the upper twenty-knot range. The powerplants of choice are are the Caterpillar C32 Acerts.

Together, Mike Burvenich and Cheoy Lee have developed a yacht with similar amenities found in 150’ motoryachts but in a much smaller package. For the customer, this means the vessel can be run more economically with a smaller crew with the added benefit that the Global 103 can go to places which have a hard time accommodating the larger yachts. In addition the 103 has a much higher top end speed then most motoryachts it's size but still can be run very economically even at a cruise speed over 20 knots.
