"Suspicions of Figueredo’s involvement were initially raised by a statement from Figueredo’s ex-girlfriend, who told police that he had bragged to her that he had sunk the boat deliberately."

    Darwinism in action.

Talking of captains being arrested, I see Capt. Paul Watson has been detained in German and awaiting extradition to Costa Rica

There's a comprehensive article about this story in the Miami Herald, I'm not sure if we're allowed to link?

I saw the herald article the other day and found it so poorly written i couldn't even post it! It mentions slashed flotation tubes and other things which make no sense whatsoever.

Speaking of ghettos, I think that's where the Miami Herald gets their reporters...

Anyway, odd story... I hope FDLE has more against the captain than the allegations of an ex girlfriend!

Exactly. Regardless, I was aboard the vessel after it was salvaged, I think what the writer meant was that the engine raw water hoses were cut. You would have to have seen the boat first hand to see the lengths they went through to make sure it sank, water tight bulkheads opened up, doors tied open with rope, portholes wired open, raw water lines cut, etc. Too bad the idiot that scuttled it didn't figure in all the wood and foam in the boat that gave it enough buoyancy to not sink completely to the bottom and ended up causing it to float below the surface to shallower water where it was eventually found!

So was the Captain who was arrested the regular captain for the Azimut and if so what would that lead us to think  at least it should have had "plenty of insurance" on the fine vessel

    are you sure it was a 80 and not a 85. ;)

Interesting tale and may get much juicier as time moves on....

I actually saw the vessel with only the bow section sticking out of the water while heading in to Chub Cay. Sad sight to see, even for an Itsa-Mutt.
