The s/y Athos is a beautifully designed sailyacht-more specifically a gaff rigged schooner- being built by Hollandjachtbouw company. The design is by Hoek Design Naval Architects.

The vessel will be able to transit the Panama Canal despite her rather large size because the designers kept in mind the height of the masts to adequately sail under the Americas bridge.

Her decks will be adorned with thre distinct traditionally designed deckhouses. Something similar to what can be seen on other traditionally design and built sailyachts such as Adele, Meteor and so on.

The Athos will have in-boom furling systems for the mast sails and two automatic roller furlers for the jib sails. The halyards and sheets/sails will be connected to captive winches allowing for an automated sailing yacht.

The vessel is to be launched late in 2008 for an expected delievery in early 2009. For more information on this wonderful build you can visit the Holland Jachtbouw website at:

To compliment the above image by Coenharbour.

February 15, 2008: Holland Jachtbouw NL: The Holland Jachtbouw website has a bit of news of the transit of the hull of their new 62M Athos. The yacht transited into the newly constructed indoor hall to commence other fitting works. The Athos represents the largest privately owned two-masted schooner in the world.

For transportation, the 84 tonne hull was sandblasted, veneered and sealed with an undercoat. At first glance, the hull might not look like a metal hull but it is. It is infact an aluminum hull that is high-modulous that has strong integrity.

Initially, the 62 M Athos was expected to be launched at the end of this year but the Holland Jachtbouw website gives the impression that she will be launched in early 2009. The interior now has to be fitted out with the installation of the deck houses and all other technicalities of the build.

For those wondering about the "Athos" project by HJB, she is to be launched in mid 2010. She'll become the largest privately owned two-masted schooner when she is launched.

Looks nice, 62M seems pretty big not to have a mizzen. And as CaptKilbride pointed out, from the drawings, she's got a modern Marconi rig, I don't see a gaff. Interesting they decided to use a full roach fore rather than fisherman/advance/gollywobbler.
