It takes a considerable amount of time before a drawing, as a natural offspring from the Architect's or Designer's drafting table, can be conversed into reality. During this process, it often takes more than one year of design and preparation before a mold is commenced or a large project, such as a yacht comes to life. During this time, lots of things can go wrong – as in this story of a yacht that should have had everything.

Such was definately the case with "Ghaccio Bollente", a design deriving from the Studio of the wellknown Dutch designer/architect André Hoek, who is most of all known for his “modern” classic designs. His designs are very distinctive, elegant and looking very retro without some of the discomforts of the yachts from earlier era's.

A very successful Dutch entrepreneur had in the mid 90's the idea that his success in business could probably also be broadened by the addition of the limited sales of an exclusive yacht, to be sold among a very select group of his wealthy clients.

Realizing that one cannot sell from plain paper only, he started with a very carefully conducted investigation into a search for a timeless and classic design that would look attractive to his prospect clients. He therefore chose for a design of André Hoek that should have been built in only the finest materials. No steel or aluminium, for that one could go to Huisman or Jongert, no - he wanted something more exclusive and decided for a laminate of carbon/kevlar prepregs as a basic hullmaterial.

The objective was to create a light, swift and elegant sailing yacht that incorporated all the fine and exclusive characteristics of a gentleman's yacht with the performance of a fast cruiser. The best of both worlds, sorta speak, in following the reputations of yachts that came from designs of such as Hereshoff, Alden and Stephens in their era of splendour and grandeur.

To date, the preparations of this entrepreneur were based on his careful calculations and his ability to make the right decisions. To give his project a professional angle, he assured the services of Kees Jongert, member of the prominent Jongert family, builders of the famous line of Jongert Yachts to the project.

Kees Jongert who had himself separated from his family's business, had nevertheless, a strong name in the world of sailing yachts and he was technically very capable, so he gave this project an extra dimension through his opinions, technical views and insight.

At the same time of starting-up the commercial footwork, the building of the hull of Ghaccio Bollente, or "Boiling Ice", started at the facilities of the Holland Composites Group, located at Lelystad, Holland. This company was chosen for its excellent workmanship specifically in composite materials. They had already obtained experience in building yachts and their site was fully prepared for this kind of highly specialized work.

Although everything was prepared carefully, commercially the project failed to lift off. The tide also turned against the entrepreneur, whos business projects were threatened by the changing of international policies of his various suppliers and not in the least, by the very strong competition of one of his strongest competitors. His subsidiary company in a neighbouring country failed in first instance to give positive results and therefore his financial resources were restricted to his main business only and the couragious project of "Ghaccio Bollente" was stalled and finally disappeared from the stage.

So this is how the story goes. But, besides the facts, did this yacht in reality disappear? Well, dear forum members, it is for you to say. Have you seen this yacht somewhere, someplace? The molds are destroyed so our beautiful Ghaccio Bollente is a one-off – if she ever is finished. And that is a possibility as the hull was in an advance stage of construction when the project was terminated.

Technically she was more than just another yacht. There was such a refinement in the design of this exceptional yacht that it is quite incomprehensible that the commercial launch had failed.
