My wife and I are thinking of stopping in Savanah on our way to our annual siesta in Key West. Would appreciate any input on places to see, stay, eat,

We're driving so any marina info is purely for selfish reasons (mine):D

Any hotel accomadations in the old part of town? Or is the whole town still considered old?

I've probably got two days in Savanah max before we have to head to KW.

I stayed in a great hotel on the water in downtown Savannah. Beautiful hotel that was 4 stories and had restaurants underneath it and a lot of restaurants around it. I cannot for the life of me remember the name, but it was built out of brick and had been there forever. It was across the water from the Weston, but was a really neat and nice old hotel.

I often stay at the Hyatt riverfront for about $130 with AAA. It lacks charm, but is on the river, clean, has a gym, pool etc. There iS a restaurant next door called Vicks on the river which is quite good.

I currently live in Savannah and I would recommend the Westin as a place ton stay. I like it because it is across the river from the city but you can take a ferry boat over to the down town resturanuts and sightseeing. If you want to get away from the city and see some of the local waterways pm me and I can give you a list of recommendations and directions. Scott

    I'd stay (do actually) here:

Take one of the trolley tours of the historic district. You might want to drive to Savannah Beach and see Ft. Pulaski. I've never been to Paula Deen's Lady and Sons Restaurant, it's supposed to be good but I don't wait in lines. Mrs. Wilkes Boarding House and Elizabeth's on 37th St. used to be very good. Pirates House is a tourist trap but the food is not bad. I would also recommend Johnny Harris Barbecue. They have a full menu is BBQ is not your thing. A great lunch is a BBQ lamb sandwich in the kitchen. Remember, my information is all about 20 years old so may not be current.

I would agree with Scott that taking a trolley our is an excellent way to familiarize oneself with the Savannah historic district. You pick up Greyline tours on MLK Blvd. There are any number of hotels along/near Bay Street including Mulberry Inn, Marshall House, Hyatt, also a Marriott Courtyard by the tourist depot.

One of my favorite restaurants is Il Pasticcio on Broughton St which is the old shopping avenue in the historic district.

For Marinas, go towards Thunderbol and see te Hinckley yard and Thunderbolt Marine. There are a few smaller marinas/yards on Wilmington Island.

Anybody know of a small older style hotel?
When I leave here I go to my Hyatt time share in KW so I don't really want to stay at a Hyatt here.

There are tons of bed and breakfasts all around. If you want somthing a bit different try the Marshall House, or the Mansion on Forsyth...

When you drive into town you will probably see a tourist info stop, if you go in they will get you 4 star room for one free night for listening to a time share deal, I negeotiated 3 nites for 100.00 across the river close to the Yorkton carrier exhibit..went to the time share thing..told the guy to stop wasting his time, drank coffee and got my 3 nites...I am bad that way but I did tell him up front. Us Canadians are poor you know.

They're similar and both are worth going to but the Yorktown is in Charleston.

Also don't forget to check out the Ships of the Sea museum. If you like boats you will love this its on Orange st and you can walk from downtown.

If you read the book or saw the movie "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" you might want to check out Bonaventure Cemetery. It's one of the oldest in the country. My father, grandmother and an aunt are buried there. Jim Williams was a friend of the family.
