    Good Arguments!

I cannot get a good argument going here (probably lucky) because between NYCAP123 and N6ERH........ I am out of my debating league. you guys have NAILED IT!!!!!!!!!!
    WHALING IS DOOMED!!!
    WHY?
    IT IS CRUEL!
    IT IS CRUEL!
    IT IS CRUEL!
    UGLY!
    UNNECCESARY!
CARRIED OUT BY A "CIVILISED" WEALTHY & EDUCATED CULTURE!

Inuits.....go for it! The world loves an aboriginal culture surviving off the land & heritage.
Japan, you may as well bow in shame for taking the Blue Fin Tuna and Whales to almost extinction! Truth is, without the West's intervention, the Japanese (note I do not say "JAPS") would have taken it ALL!
And before anyone calls me a Western Hypocrite, go back to a very concise statement by N6ERH in the earlier post. If you care look for it.

Marmot, is it possible to keep that ego under control, I for one don’t enjoy reading disrespectful posts.

    Hi,

I don't see that last Marmot contribution as disrespectful at all.

There are a number of users here who are aware of the referred to posters habit of answering any and all questions posted with info that is not always correct but is pushed as fact. Some have posted comment and I am sure there are others who think the same but haven't written anything on here.

Any questioning of the validity of this posters info often results in a verbal tirade, I have been the subject of one that was subsequently modified by the Mods here.

I for one enjoy Marmot. I don't have an opinion regarding the validity of his attacks on Henning, but I really enjoy how articulate and well crafted his insults are. I view Marmot as "A thinking man's Don Rickles". Henning is quite intelligent and has no trouble handling Marmot's barbs at all. Henning needs no help from us.

There has been no profanity or vulgar words exchanged, just witty and clever attacks that must be appreciated if not for their accuracy, their amusing turn of a phrase. I actually enjoy it, it adds a bit of spice to the forum.

    Cheers!
    ...Richard

Is this really the proper place to post this? What does it have to do with Yachting? Just askin', as I did on another thread.

Well, for me it has more to do with seagoing peoples,

    Than yachting.

From my corner of North America, here are these:

    http://www.makah.com/whaling.htm

    http://www.historylink.org/index.cfm?DisplayPage=output.cfm&file_id=5301

I might make the point that in both

The case of the Japanese and the Makah

It has, ultimately, to do with treaty agreements,

Not acts of civil disobedience from the protestors.

Which, though they make great video clips,

Have nothing to do with international law.

    Just my $.02

Your terrorism analogy works. I disagree with the "research" loophole and what the japanese are doing however.... the sea shepards are acting like terrorists. Rewarding or allowing this sort of behavior will only encourage more and more terrorism for this or that "passionate cause".
Is this something the world wants to reward and encourage?
Is this how you solve problems in the future?

If these idiots continue to get away with this, get ready to see more of it in different arenas. Personally I don't think that is a good thing.

"Terrorist" are the Somali pirates. They kill and take hostages for ransom, and not much is done about them. Sea Shepherd are nothing more than relatively peaceful protesters. Let's not confuse the two. They don't go after innocent bystanders but a defined target directly involved in a despicable and only quasi-legal act.

    Escalation

What the Japanese whalers have done now is given Sea Shep a raft of different angles to attack. Unfortunately I think the next few weeks are going to see something a lot more serious. Paul will now pull out all the stops as he has, IMHO a darn good reason to hit back harder than ever before. The mother ship may just find Paul running up their stern instead of a whale! He has all the attention, he will not waste it on a few minor clashes.
As for terrorists, it's an old saying but true, to one side they are terrorists, to the other, fighting the good fight. The Somali issue is not terrorism, it has no ideaolgy to it, just greed, that is PIRACY.

With all due respect, you make a conscious choice to do so when you read my posts.

Disrespectful? Sure it is, as disrespectful as a bridge team member on discovering the vessel is off course by a mile or so and heading for the rocks advising the watch officer that he has his head up his butt.

I think Henning's post count speaks for itself.

IMHO Henning brings a lot of knowledge and experience to the forum. However, with knowledge and experience like Marmot's and K1W1's on the sidelines it's best to factcheck before posting. :)

I would call the somali pirates "Thieves and high jackers", they want money, period.

here are your "peaceful protesters" in action

You're sensitivities are askew. With the Somali you forgot to add "murderers" with "thieves and hijackers". They threaten lives which today is called a "terroristic threat" if you just do it to your neighbor. What Sea Shepherd does doesn't even rise to the level of the protests at NYU, Columbia and Berkley back in the late 60's/ early 70's. He harasses like a starling does to a crow who goes after its nest. He knows where the line is and he does a pretty good job of doing no more than poking his big toe over it. I've never seen him try to hurt a person, seize or even damage a vessel; only slow or disable it through non-destructive means (fouling props)and he's not been real successful at that. As for the Japanese Master, he is obligated to avoid hitting another vessel no matter what they are doing. (I've been tempted to run over Sunday sailors when they get stupid under my bow on more than one occasion, but I'm just not allowed). If that interrupts their whaling they can file suit.:D

Let me put it this way. I agree withe Sea Shepards cause but I disagree with their dirtbag tactics.

They purposely boarded someone else's ship under way and then immediately cried that the Japanese are illegally "talking hostages" ? Really? Watson says in their own video that was their plan. Just like the Ady Gil running circles around that ship dragging ropes, shining lasers in their eyes and then crying "murder" when they get run over from their own stupidity.

This kind of thing makes it very hard for me to take their side. (putting it politely for the forum here)

Many people find Sea Shepherd's tactics too radical. They can give their money to Greenpeace or even eat whale meat. That's the wonderful thing about a semi-free society.

Now, I may be wrong about the name here, but, if memory serves me correctly, Watson took a highly paid job with the association that represents the fish farm industry in BC, this industry has had a peer reviewed scientific document issued that toally condems the practice of fish farming to the point where it is destroying the Pacific salmon returns in BC, yet this guy supports that industry and goes to bat for it publicly. Perhaps Out my Window can verify.

Gentlemen, allow me to de-rail this discussion... momentarily.

I haven't been following this thread, but I've had a few emails from people expressing concern about the exchanges taking place between certain members. To this, I found the post quoted above by N6ERH to be a perfectly fitting response.

    'Nuff said.

I’m probably the wrong guy to offer an opinion on this controversial subject, as I’m an avid “recreational” fisherman with enough problems on my plate as not to be concerned about others.
Each year I buy a fishing licence, whose proceeds support conservation laws, and hatcheries that stock the fish that I catch.
I’ve given up on tidal fishing some time ago, and prefer the calm and quiet of a lake.

It’s common knowledge in Canada anyway that due to over-fishing, the Cod fishery on the east coast has come to an end, and put generations of maritime tradition into the history books. The Salmon fishery on the West Coast is, and has been on life support for years now.

Paul Watson was kicked out of Greenpeace some time ago for his radical views and militant behaviour to advocate change. Others say that a squeaky wheel gets the grease.

Here’s an interesting read if you have the time…

My apologies, toMr Watson, the man I was thinking of was Patrick Moore, one of the original founders of Greenpeace although no longer with the organization., again, my apologies.
