Great stuff thanks...and given the earlier posts in this thread about the desire to protect oneself against the bad guys versus the legal issues abroad regarding carrying obvious weapons aboard such as shotguns, rifles, handguns and so forth...what about carrying some real firepower: a real flamethrower?
I mean, it's just a tank and a hose and a pipe, right? The kind of thing our boys used on the Nips in the old John Wayne movies. Taken apart, you've got what looks like plumbing bits to the authorities. And put together, your average pirate, at a 100-foot range, risks becoming a crispy critter.
It could also double as a flare gun in an emergency.
Any self-respecting pirate might not mind getting shot at, but the thought of catching some burning gasoline in the face might give them pause, eh?

That's the kind of thing, especially if seen on You Tube in the world's 'bad neighborhoods', that could be a real deterrent, you betcha.

Love it, with one small problem...

Fire and boats do not mix well, and you would have to get too close for it to work on scumbags that are in tiny boats. I'd rather use S&W Auto Long Barrel
with 20 rounds in the chamber and my 10x HP Scope. I could pick the **** off a flies ass at 100 yds, how hard could it be to shoot these _ _ _ _ _ _ _ ! (Please feel free to fill in the missing word)

would anyone know which are the safest marinas to go to if visiting curacao, as this is one of the islands with the least reports and I am aware that there have been many thetfs of dinks from yachts recently

God bless you Capt.Mike!! Make people respect the Privacy of ones vessel. I would like to ask a few different people what they believe to be a premier vessel protection array. My view is the mossberg marine series in 12ga. it has large capacity and buckshot will deter even metal hulled vessels (with correct munitions) outside of buckshot range, you begin to get into some legal issues. What do yall think.

I am thoroughly enjoying this thread. I am comfortable having a weapon on board, but that doesn't make it a good idea. I am a neophyte when it comes to international cruising, including Canada, the Bahamas, and nations throughout the Caribean. Would those of you with more expertise and experience be willing to discuss the rules/regulations concerning weapons on board a cruiser is likely to encounter when crossing international borders?

Shoot, crossing state borders in the US could be a topic of its own.

    Please carry on.

stash them deep and ditch them if you have to

yep carry them all the time. If needed I have tossed them out the engine room port. I have been boarded by dogs and passed the hiding test many times. Leave flares all over the place...........legal and throw off dogs...plus this works but it cruel http://www.gunsnet.net/forums/archive/index.php/t-10247.html. Mini 14 my butt several times the 80's in Dinner Key Marina......You leave land to get away from this kind of BS and you are 99 times more likely to get attacked on land in Miami than ANY where else. Problems once in Mona Passage and 100 miles off Mexico. Have a few guns on the bottom of harbors. Don't be afraid to toss them if you have to. No I won't tell anyone where I do hide mine but it's possible to do so with some creativity. Non gun defense is possible. Hawaiin slings, bear spray and you put on your fire gear, 1oz cayanee pepper in a snorkle and blow it in their face. I have done this, guy nearly cried himself to death. You do have the choice to frighten with a warning shot.............Keep a good watch and safe passage.

It is unfortuneate that the world is not the same as when these "civilized" law were made. Pirates know the law, no different than any other criminal. They know boats/ships are to be unarmed and odds of getting caught are low. Especially when many don't have set a sail plan - just cruising, maybe not reported missing or overdue for days or weeks. Any action to repell attackers will warrant investigation by someone, which can put the victim of the attack in pearel. The attacks IMO will only increase until the powers at be decide to be pro-active vs. passive and hoping it goes away on its own.

For any firearm in board? I did not realize that. I know that handguns are an absolute no-no in NYC, but the shotgun stored below was never given a second thought. It will be this summer.

That article was written by an ex UK SAS Man who has seen plenty of action in his time.

He is very much up with the play on the current scene around the NE of Africa.
