    Do you Tag & Release?

So what about the current population of Minkie whales? I have tried to stay away from this thread because I seem to flame too many (shouldn't care, right!)
But it should be about boating, that is why I am here, not to make enemies!

As someone pointed out earlier, Western technology has allowed the harvesting of ALL ocean resources to far outstrip the ability of the species to recover. Especially when BIG dollars are involved. I lived in Indonesia a few years, they had ENORMOUS natural sea resources which are now collapsed due to no control and now send their vessels to strip Australian waters.

Let me ask you "canyon reaper":
Do you REAP the canyons you fish or tag & release? If you do reap, and your fellow fishermen (I am one) did the same, how long would we have left to enjoy the sport?
We don't need to bring back the Marlin for food, we have many other fish in healthy abundance. Same as the Japanese do NOT need the whale meat, its the stubborness and arrogance of that particular industry!

I beleive the numbers were estimated at 650k for the southern ocean. Sea Shepard claims the japanese kill about 400 a year. That does seem like a sustainable fishery to me. I could be wrong. Sea Shepard cares nothing more than to get publicity and money for their own organization. I bring up the Minke whale population becuase there are alot more species in the ocean that are at lower stocks than ever.

I don't literally "REAP" the canyons :) Yes my name doesn't go hand in hand with conservation. But to answer your question I've never killed a billfish, never will. But have killed lots of tuna.

I completly agree with you. We are destroying our oceans resources. Compare them to just 20-30 years ago. I do not think sportfisherman are the problem though. If commerical operations were not raping the oceans, you and me could kill all the fish we liked and it would have virtully no impact. (not saying I would).

We agree on the billfish, I have only killed one which drowned as it was hooked in the tail, what a bloody fight and we tried to recover it for 20 minutes. As for the Whales, with these creatures, it is not so much as to the sustainability of the resource, but their intelligence, their understanding of what is occuring and worst of all the BARBARIC way in which they are killed.
Different cultures view each species from varying sentimental aspects. Would you eat dog? Bet not, but in Indonesia and Korea it is a delicacy. How do they kill them in Jakarta? Place the dog in a hessian sack and beat it to death. How about a horse? French (some) love it!
I am NOT a vegetarian, my wife is, and still cooks me a great steak. I suppose my long winded point is, IF we have to kill an intelligent creature (and I believe all on this thread agree whales are not on their menu!) Then let's show how far humanity has come and find a humane way, or better yet NOT kill this highly evolved creature! POSSIBLY NOT KILL ANY creatures that have an intelligence which matches ours, for crying out loud, it is not about Paul and Sea Shepherd. If he is only after glory(which I believe he is not) let him have it. It's about evolving. I was brought up in Northern Rhodesia, people had foot stools and side tables made from elephants legs! Sable heads stuck on walls everywhere. Hunting (my family included) was a big past time but then we learnt how barbaric we seemed, some of us anyway.
Thank God for the people in power when the Yellowstone Park was created or your kids and millions of others would only see that America in old books. That is it, now I get off my fruitcake box!
Lets talk fishing Canyon! I am hoping to own a convertible within a few weeks IF my offer is accepted.
    TIGHT LINES:)

Yeah, you are wrong, and it is the point of contention. Whales are mammals, not fish, so people don't consider them part of a fishery. They are also considered in the intelligent end of the spectrum, and that seems to be where the majority of people have an issue with whaling.

Well, it certainly is good to know that the western sense of "barbaric" is what counts

The people who brought us the complete anthropomorphization of domestic animals (hip replacement for old dogs??? rotflmao) and brought these species crashing down in the first place now think piracy (including intentionally ramming vessels on the high seas) is OK, even if it's carried out against legal hunts. This has a ring of familiarity to it... Oh! Right! The analogy is the "Right to Life" supporters who praise people who kill doctors who perform legal abortions.

    Barbaric, indeed.

I don't think there is any validity to equating the Inuit's hunt to the Japanese. First, the Inuit have been at it for a bit longer than the Japanese. Second, it is truly tied to their survival as a people better justifying the "heritage" claim. But what I haven't noticed in these post is that the Inuit hunt is legal. The Japanese take advantage of a lack of enforcement. They take whales under the "research" loophole, but I don't see much research being done except researching how much money can be made.

    Hi,

Here is something out of the NZ Press where the Capt of the Ady Gil has something to say.

    http://www.stuff.co.nz/world/australia/3272854/Ady-Gil-captain-I-ve-had-nightmares

I think he should have a look at the videos posted here, he claims that he was low on fuel and stopped in the water - this is definitely not what the video from the Japanese Vessel shows, maybe they PShopped it to make it look like the Ady Gil lurched forward into their path.

Tonight Fox News had video of A.G.'s Cpt calling for the Japanese
Capt to be charged with attempted murder.

I said it before, and I say it again. The guy is a complete tool and doesn't even deserve the news bandwidth he's already getting.

Agreed he's a tool, but without him this would happen in silence.

And without this 'tool' Australia probably wouldn’t be taking legal action in a few months time.

   Who is Australia going to take legal action against? They surely aren't going to take it against the Japanese, they have no leverage.

What kind of legal action is being taken? The attempted murder charges or something else? I'm aware that Sea Shepherd is putting a lot of media pressure on Australia to bring political and trade sanctions against Japan as well as to step up enforcement of the ban. Media pressure is a wonderful thing. Too bad it takes putting lives in jeopardy, but Greenpeace doesn't seem capable of getting in front of the cameras. Sea Shepherd does seem to be the only ones really able to bring attention to the plight.

Nah, Paul is pretty well a nut job whether he has a TV show or not. He's been doing things the same way for over 20 years now....
