I haven't looked at all of this thread, but based on the way the bow of Ady Gil looks, I would say it must have hit the Bill Perry Reef Bouy.:)

I dunno if you are trying to be funny here or simply got your boat names and threads mixed up.

There is no question how the bow of the Ady Gil got damaged, there is just the different parties version of how the crash happened.

I guess my comedic timing isn't so good. I thought my use of :) would make it obvious that it was a joke. Sorry:eek:

    Me 2. lol

Your analogy succeeds only because the history of slavery bears little resemblance to that of whaling. The Japanese and many other cultures were happily whaling without ill effects for millenia before industrialized westerners showed up and caused widespread population crashes and extinctions.

But let's not get too deep into philosophy or historical perspectives here. SS, like many eco glory seekers, doesn't act on the basis of logic. It's all about what will get them in the news. What's most interesting is to see the difference in perspective one finds on Japanese websites and news coverage.

The whales they hunt are not endangered. They kill about 400 whales a year when the population of Minkie whales in the southern ocean is well over 650,000 whales. There are alot more fish that deserve more attention then these whales which certainly have a sustainable fishery. Bluefin tuna for example. We have alot of foods in the US that are luxuary items, same with the Japanese. The Japanese kill/buy/sell alot more tuna than whales. I don't agree with killing whales but again if it is a sustainable fishery I don't see how I can complain.

Has anyone watched this show? Someone is going to get killed. The Capt. puts people on the ship that have never been on a boat before. They have no idea what they are doing. The video shows they clearly put the bow of the Ady Gil infront of the Japanese ship on purpose.

Nah, that 15 minutes of fame is up. Nobody cares anymore, hardly anyone did in the first place. They make it difficult to stir up outrage when they themselves are outrageous.

Another boating website put up a poll on whose fault the accident was.
here is a excerpt from what happened.

"On Wednesday at 11 pm EST – after 10 hours of jury balloting -- Ady Gil was well on its way to being named the guilty party in the collision with 42% of the vote, and Shonan Maru clearly being exonerated with only 21% of the BoatTEST.com member-jury. About 650 jurors had cast ballots by that time. Then, in the dark of night, as the world turned, something mysterious happened...

By late Thursday afternoon in BoatTEST.com’s Jury Room there had been an incredible reversal of fortune. From out of no where, Shonan Maru had 42% of the votes for conviction, and Ady Gil only had 33%! Now there were over 1600 votes cast! Immediately on discovering this change, our webmaster realized that someone, or a group of people, had stuffed the Jury secret ballot box."

I would be certain it was people from the Sea Shepard forum. Im not going to put in the time or effort but if you really want to waste your time and check it out. I'm sure they have a thread directing people to the site and to vote.

HA! I guess if you're gonna act like a pirate on the high seas, it's not much of a stretch to put together a "boarding party" on an internet poll! lol

here is more from the article.

"However, when checking the IP addresses of the jury members we discovered that two stood out with 256 votes coming from one and 58 from another. BoatTEST.com is a strong believer in “one person, one vote.” And while a hand full of people might be from one IP address, not 56 much less 256. Voting from these two IP addresses accounted for nearly 19% of the total and were all cast for the conviction of Shonan Maru!"

Exactly. Who gives a crap, as long as the MESSAGE gets through. If you are flying a pirates flag then you have already stated your contempt for the rules.

Does anyone (aside from that group on that particular forum) actually care what the poll results are? Will these results be handed over to any maritime judicial committee, or international courts?
