Volvo Penta D12 Gearbox problem

    As a relatively new member, it seems that i've found the right place to start the discussion. I've just purchased the Atlantis 50 boat from the division of Azimut|Benetti. After approx. 6 engine hours from new, i've noticed the leakage from the starboard engine. AND.... All the hell broken loose. Volvo Penta dealer whom i addressed told me that in order to replace the gearbox we have to dismantle (!) the floor of the cockpit, get the whole assembly (engine and the gearbox) be lifted by crane, then the gearbox will be replaced, and all then the floor of the cockpit will be placed in it's place. The estimate for the work from Volvo Penta is $4,000 approximately, another company which is dismantling the floor estimates it's invoice at $15,000. I've sent several e-mails to the manufacturer, and there's almost no response. I wonder if somebody else had a similar problem?

    Although I'm not familiar with that boat, that floor should be pannels held in by caulking and a few screws. From there they'll bring in a frame and hoist or lift with the forklift. Don't see cranes involved. That $15K sounds high. Question: With only 6 hours on the motors what's the warranty situation? Second question: If it's not covered by warranty, how bad is that leak? Often you're better off just putting down an oil pad and monitoring.

    if you are having problems with warranty claims then my advice would be to first contact the dealership where you bought the boat. As Atlantis dealers they should be able to submit warranty claims to the factory on your behalf. If you are having an issue with not getting a response from the dealer then go straight to the factory. I had a quick look on their website and it gives a name, telephone number and email address for a customer assistance.

    If only it was so simple....I've addressed directly the Warranty Claim in Atlantis, sent them several e-mails, and called them a lot of times. Only to get non-promising responses and no assistance at all. Regarding the engine problem they are redirecting me to the Volvo Penta dealer. Wonder if these guys there in Atlantis care about their reputation at all...And this happens to me, their customer for the boat which costs approx $1m! Losing my patience now, consider the legal action...Anyway, thanks for the response!

    1. The Volvo Penta guys just started the warranty, i mean registered the vessel and the engines, so the engines have 2 years of the warranty period ahead.
    2. The leak-when i've seen it-there were 1-1,5 gallons of some fluid inside the engine bay-not sure if it's engine or gearbox oil.
    3. Engine compartment-we've inspected it from any possible angle, the only way to get enough opening to get the engine lifted is to cut the cockpit floor along the seams.
