Been a while since I posted anything, finally found and bought the boat we wanted, a 53' Hatteras convertable sportfisher....love it. We have had it for 3 months, bought in long beach ca harbor and are currently cruiseing it up to coos bay oregon. Had to pull into Morro Bay with steering failure and I think starter went out on s. engine it will just whirl ANY HELP OUT THERE??? Thanks Ken & Julie

Sounds pretty normal. Try giving the starter a whack with a wrench while turning the key. That should get you going temp, but pick up a new starter and have yours rebuilt and keep as a spare. If it continues to whirl after the motor kicks over and won't dislodge with a whack or two shut down and change out immediately. Not an uncommon item to break down.

just pull teh thing and have it rebuilt by a local algternator/starter shop. pretty simple, cheap, not worth messing with it although indeed, sometimes a whack will get you going. but you dont' want the starter to hang while pulling 32v high amps thru!

Steering failure, hynautics? you need to keep the reservoir topped off as well as air (20 psi or so). if you get low the flybridge helm will loose prime. the autopilot pump may still work though since it's liekly in the ER and lower.

easy to reprime once topped of... keep turning one way till the helm reprimes, then turn the other way to the stop.

On that steering, locate the leak and fix before just adding fluid. It could be as simple as a lose connection.

    1970 Hatteras steering fluid

OK fixed the starter, it was a leaver that alows the bendix to kick the flywheel. Now on the steering , There are no loose connections but I,ll be if I can find anywhere to add fluid. I know that the steering piston in the stern is leaking a little so it has to be low on fluid ....any advice Ken Call if you can help 928-713-2293 Thanks
