I will be ordering my first yacht in the next 10-12 months. I am wondering if there is any such beast as a (this is my name for it, maybe it exists as something else) perimeter security radar?

What I envision would be a radar that could work either while moored or under way that would "watch" for boats coming within a user-defined perimeter and set off an alarm in the boat. What would be really great would be one where the user could define his/her own perimeter, using an electronic stylus or something to draw a perimeter line that would not have to be a circle. You could draw "out" nearby land, buoys, other anchored boats etc. The radar would ignore items outside the drawn perimeter, and perhaps items inside the drawn perimeter that were "tagged" by the user as non-threatening (buoys, anchored boats that you have had a chance to talk with, etc). Perhaps the radar could give a preliminary notification if another boat was approaching, but was on a course to "glance" off your perimeter, and a louder notification if another craft was to turn towards you, allowing you to wake up and assess the situation.

I think technically this should not be all that difficult, but then I am not an especially "technical" person, so maybe I'm just wrong about that.

If this already exists through a dozen manufacturers I feel dumb, but if you can point me toward some of them I'll at least be happy and dumb. Thank you.

Standard on almost all radars. It is a circle though and can be moved close or far. It's called VRM (Variable Range Marker).

What you are asking for existed as an add-on device to Furuno radars in the early 80:s and I have used it a lot. Both at anchor and under way. It is pretty nice to have it as a rearview mirror. You could select any piece of the cake, by outer and inner circle and radials.

I have not looked into how many new radars have it, but expect that all high end systems can offer it.
