Apparently big businessman Andreas Liveras has been killed in the terrorist unrest in Mumbai India. From the timesonline... "British yachting tycoon Andreas Liveras killed in Bombay terror attacks Andreas Liveras had gone to the hotel for a meal Philippe Naughton A 73-year-old Cypriot émigré who made a fortune chartering luxury yachts was named tonight as the only Briton known to have been killed in the Bombay terror attacks. The city's St George's hospital confirmed that Andreas Liveras died last night after receiving multiple gunshot wounds at the Taj Palace Hotel. He had gone to the hotel for a meal." Many of us might know of Mr. Liveras as the man behind his charter company Liveras yachts with the recently overhauled 90-meter "Lauren L" and 85-meter "Alysia". Indeed sad news. *** http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/asia/article5246974.ece
Sad news. I met him in Antigua when he first brought the 202' Princess Tania over and was looking for crew. I first saw the boat in Malta and what a dog's dinner they made of it. The yard had added a wheelhouse so low you could not stand-up in. The yard manager sort of asked me if I fancied a Project Manager job but I ran away laughing."What is a yacht finish?" is not a good question to ask. I think he sued the ass off them. Just 18 months later the boat was in the Caribbean on charter. I went for an interveiw for crew on the boat. I rang the bell and the owner,Andreas, was the one who answered, we had a coffee, he showed me the boat and you could feel his pride and force of nature at what he had achivied. Very personal. He was very open but intence in that businessman way. I turned the job down but liked him. Fish
That is really nice that you got to meet him. He built a great company for himself employing two of the -almost- most expensive charter yachts in the industry-. I wonder how the Liveras Yachts company will move on from here now...The thing is I was actually looking at the photo gallery of "Lauren L" in the Liveras website when I got wind of his passing..how strange.
Bad luck: Being in the wrong place at the wrong time. I have stayed at the Taj in Mumbai many times. A fine hotel it was, and one of my favorite lodgins. Now the terrorists turned it into a dump and a death trap. This poor chap picked the wrong time and the wrong place. RIP.
The passing of Andreas Liveras As a charter broker, I had the honor of working with Mr. Liveras several times over the years. He was always grateful for the charters we arranged on his yachts, and he was a gracious host of many parties onboard his yachts - parties that he would throw for charter brokers to express his gratitude for their business. Truly, a kind and generous soul.
Thanks for the welcome! I hope I can contribute in a small way to the continued success of this site.
