I saw Izumi in Waterford, NY

my friend and I were taking in the sights in Waterford and we came across this yacht coming through the flight of locks heading to the Hudson River from the Erie Canal. He took several photos of her! Here's one as she came through the last lock and headed to tie up for the night before continuing on their way to Massachusettes. The crew handled her like she was twenty foot instead of the 120 she said she is.

Between the smoke and the fenders, she looks like she's either preparing for battle or just came from one...

Izumi Smoking

Pamela's photo is great. In it you can see the gate of Lock 1 of the Erie Canal. I loved the description of Izumi as looking ready for battle between the smoke and the fenders.

I was also there in Waterford at the Hudson River end of the Erie Canal last night and saw this boat several hundred feet to the east of where Pamela's photo was taken. Concerning the question about the smoke, yes, it was smoking very badly. The fumes were terrible, polluting the whole area. It is obvious that her engines are having some problem.

When the ship reached the east end of the Waterford bulkhead, just as she touched the Hudson river, she stopped, and rotated 180 degrees on a dime, apparently with both front and rear thrusters. Then they tied up at the bulkhead. A friend who lives on the river about ten miles south has not yet seen her pass there. The ship may be having engine work done in Waterford.

Izumi passed downriver under the Bear Mountain Bridge about 15 minutes ago. Unfortunately I was staring out the window on a conference call instead of having a camera at the ready at that moment... She's quite a nice looking yacht.

Pleased to report she was showing neither smoke nor fenders today!

The yacht was gorgeous... but yeah, it really was smoking like that. My guess is they had to keep it in idle for so long getting through the flight of locks that it was just exhaust. The same for the fenders everywhere, the locks are one right after teh other, so once they got away from the there, they would be able to pull the fenders in and open the throttle more.

I was looking at one of these yachts, for me the ill placed tender is a no sale. The PJ 135 also has this. I think that I would have Mangusta 108 over this. Still haven’t found one that I fancy though.
