I have taken the advice of some of experienced senior members and guys like K1W1 and Garry and therefore have crossed out the DD 16V 92TA engines that I was previously looking at purchasing.

I now have 2 options. A CAT engine and this MTU model. I have a lot of details on the CAT and know them much better myself as well. But I am not very familiar with this MTU model at 1500 bhp. Its from 1995.

Can any of you experienced users of this forum kindly give me some feedback on this model? particularly its reliability, FUEL CONSUMPTION, noise, etc.

Much appreciated and thanks a lot in advance!!!

I think you are making a better choice. If You already had two strokes I would not pull them just because the two strokes there are good diesel but I would not repower with them unless thats all I could afford. There a lot of good boats out there with two strokes i them.

CAT VS MTU flip a coin,,,
but you should be able to get parts easier for the cats

    Thanks Cpt. Mike!

I do certainly prefer the CAT due to their smaller block size (space savings) and the HEUI injectors....!!!

Several years ago I worked with these engines, great engine. I guess 1995 must have been about the last year they were built so I suspect parts may become an issue in the near future if not already.

Which cats are you looking at

Thanks for that Garry. If 1995 is the last year (probably close to the last year) that they manufactured this MTU then I agree that parts will start to become an issue sooner than later.

The cats are a pair of 3412E 1400bhp engines from 2002. can extend the warranty. has around 2000 hours of use - removed as a runner. the engines r certainly in very good condition. what do u think?

I think that is the best option so far. Cat have reciently release a new version of this engine rated at 1800 up so I do believe that this engine will be in production for quite some time. Also if you can get them under warranty then all the better.

This is great. i thought that CAT actually stopped this model after December of 2007. But it is great to know that they r bringing in a 1800 hp model. i'm curios to know how they perform. Cheers.
