Doctors on Yachts

    I'm interested in a scenario I've had in my mind for a few weeks now.

    As an MD, if you work on a yacht or a cruise ship, are you required to hold the medical licence of the Flag State or your country of residence?

    Is the ship liable for their actions or the MD?

    Do the larger yachts keep doctors on the vessels?

    Hi,

    I haven't been involved in any yachts that had a doctor onboard fulltime but have worked for a couple of Owners who have had "Doctors" as an integral part of their entourage.

    I have also been on a couple of boats with registered nurses sailing as stewardesses etc- one helped me when I dis located my shoulder onboard.

    Call me crazy, Birdseye, but when the blood is pouring out of me, it would be somewhat unlikely for me to inquire about where you studied & where are you from.

    I got a good laugh, at the price of the Lawyers, who may be reading this. I think most Yachts would not be sailing with out these people, sad, but true.

    As for Docs, larger Yachts may, some come complete with a full infirmary. Large cruise ships, yes. I like the idea of having at least one RN around. I big pluss if you are going to be doing a lot of diving. :cool:

    I would only ask if the MD is in good standing before we sailed. It would be more of a question if the Yacht is flagged in the USA, that is my understanding. :confused:

    Well i believe that in a Giga yacht or something they should have a doctor or a nurse for 1st aid because if u are in a 50m + yacht there are many facilities you have many people working on board for anything cleaning the engine room, cleaning outside the yacht on your highest deck.. its possible that he might get injured and maybe seriously... and if the Giga yacht is somewhere like 500miles away from coast even the yacht has helicopter on board i belive that the injured man/woman should been take care by a proffesional. I've been to a Giga yacht in meditterian sea 80m which had onboard 1doctor and 1 nurse... but i dont think that most of the yachts got one.
