Hey folks, great to find a sensible place to discuss things with genuinely helpfull members!

I'm a young South African who recently completed about 3 months training in Turkey to get an IYT master of yachts which includes the STCW 95. I'm currently crew on a yacht delivery from Turkey to the UK. While reasonably competant and full of theory I know my qualifications far exceed my experience.

I would like to make a career in sailing/boating. So folks, any suggestions on what to do apart from pounding the quays and hoping for the best?

Also, I'm arriving in the UK on about the 4th August, so if there are any kind folks who have a berth open it would be much appreciated. I'm happy to go anywhere in the world.

OK, thanks in anticipation and Fair winds to you all

great attitude to start out with... would you like to hear some deckhand advice? i will start with the most basic: buy yourself a good knot book to start with. my fav was the first one i bought. i take it everywhere. it's titled "marlinspike sailor" by the sir hervey garrett smith. i am not sure how widely this is published...

number two - buy a tool bag. mine is medium size with plenty of pockets. ideal to me is something that you can have as many tools as is comfortable to carry all over deck. i drag mine almost everywhere. my most important and favorite tools are my screw drivers. i got really lucky. i purchased my first set at fred meyer in my home town, and every time i lose a screw driver i buy a new one when i get home. anyway you get the point...

i hope you find a yacht that uses you to your potential, and that you have fun!! i'll also keep you in mind...

p.s. great use of this forum!!

    :)
