    Hi Everyone,
Let me just say that I love this site and thank you to all who post pix and info. here. So, Im a USCG Captain overseeing a new 127 ft. new build and the boat is MCA compliant. I have not had an MCA vessel before. I will start hiring crew in August and Im trying to gather as much info. as possible. I have contacted MCA but they dont seem to call you back. I know what personnel they require but I dont know what certificates they should have, if any. Is there a website link to find this out? The boat will be cayman flag and be based in FLorida, cruising bahamas and Caribe. Thanks in advance for your responces.

Thanks Loren. sounds quite confusing. I always thought that having a USCG license made the process a little easier but it looks like in this instance regarding MCA, there may be more hoops to jump through for having being USCG.

    MCA Misinformation

Unless the boat is going to charter as a commercial vessel (i.e. in the Med), the owner and insurance company are the only parties you need to answer to. If the boat is private and/or chartering under a demise contract (also called 80/20) there are no manning requirements.
Of course, if you ask the MCA they will give you all kinds of requirements which need to be fulfilled- Ignore them and take them as self-serving mis-information.
Also, don't let them lead you to believe that your USCG license isn't valid. You may opt to get a Certificate of Equivalency, but it isn't necessary.

Like he said, It is the flag state that has the juristiction you need to refer to them and their requirements and not get sucked in by MCA hype.

Charter Yacht under red ensign flag

If you read LY2, Large Commercial Yacht Code (i.e. MSN 1792 (M)), Ch. 26, there will be interesting information for you. I think it is possible to down load it from the MCA web site.

Run, don't walk from the MCA thieves and the schools that support them! Unless you plan on flying a true British flag (london, Isle Of Man) don't even bother contacting them or worrying about them. There are lots of other flags out there that are not red and are just as good!!

    MCA Question

Thanks so much for the responces. I agree with you all about MCA however, heres the case. The boat will be launched in August and will be MCA compliant. The flag is cayman. The boat will not charter and will be based in Florida. It will not be commercial registered.Im not sure what to expect from the first survey from MCA when the boat is commisioned. I have never commissioned a vessel before. If it was up to me ,like ychtcptn said, I would RUN like the wind blows!
