What will be the approximate charges for designing(complete set of designs) a 110 feet fiberglass yacht. I know it will be different depending on the size of the designing firm. But considering its a small to medium firm what could be the charges.

    Hi,

The size of the design company has little to do with it, but some interior designers do charge a premium.

I think you should go for 10% of the final price of construction to cover everything in the design. This means styling, general accommodation plan, naval architecture and engineering.

Interesting topic Lars. Would there usually be any saving in having one NA shop handle it all? Versus having independent exterior/interior designers who feed concepts into the NA shop? Or do the NA shops provide interiors at all?

I think the only saving you can do, is to build a clone of a yacht you know and like. Or a semi-custom yacht. Other than that, the saving will probably give you an inferior yacht.

What you need is normally a project manager, it can be an independent, or from the design or naval architect office you like to work with.

There are design offices that can supply all you need, from interior decoration to naval architecture, usually they buy what they can not do inhouse. Even some shipyards will take care of all this.

If you work with the right people you will end up with the best yacht in the world. But not the cheapest...

You can never learn to much, but one of the typical problems with the shipyards is that few of the employees has any hands on yachting experience. I am almost daily experiencing that even the best boat builders have not really the fantasy to imagine what can happen at sea. I could say the same about most designers, but this is another topic...;)

My point is that the best independent project managers I know are former captains, especially from sailing yachts. So, can you get some sea time onboard the kind of yachts or ships you are interested to supervise construction of, you will probably get and make a better job.
