i'm talking to a yacht owner who would like to possibly move his yacht to Florida and is asking me approximately how much it would cost to do. it is a sailboat so obviously fuel is not a major concern. the largest factor i need to figure out is the transit fees for the Canal, does anyone know what they are currently running at ?? i tried the Canal Authority website, but i do not understand the tolls. they seems to only be listed for commercial traffic.

has anyone here been through the canal and could give some advise as well ?

Admeasures will board before transit and they will tell exactly what the fees are.
As a guideline for your calculations a total should not exceed US 1000$.I paid 600$ for 40 meter boat.
    Good luck

Have not done a canal passage myself. When looking at it I was given the following 2 pieces of advice by some that had done the trip.
    1) Read: A Captain's Guide to Transiting the Panama Canal in a Small Vessel by David Wilson
    2) Hire an agent. The paperwork can be a bear and a first-timer will otherwise find that the charges are "open to individual interpretation".

Good Advice. I've heard horror stories otherwise. My agent made the entire transit very smooth and efficient. We arrived at 3PM and were on our way through by 8PM. Another boat which arrived at the same time waited for 3 days.

In the last couple of months I have made 2 transits. Get an agent before you get to panama, comunicate regularly with them. It costs a little more but it is worth it.
