Great discussion. I am considering a '94 Viking 47 convertible. It has MAN motors with a little over 1000 hrs on each. Haven't seen it yet in person but appears in very good shape. Seems a bit of a premium at $279k but who knows where that ends up after trials, etc. Any feedback esp. on the motors?

Which engines are you asking about. The boat came with 680 Mans and the 800 8cyl mans were optional. I had a close friend who had a similar vintage 47 with the 800s. He put a lot of hours on it and there were no major issues during his ownership. The boat overall was a good reliable boat. Of course get a thorough hull and engine survey. I agree with you the price seems high. 1000 hours would not bother me, provided they have been maintained. I am of the mind that engines that have been run frequently over the course of their lives live longer better lives than those with low hours and sit a lot.

    Welcome to Yacht Forums.
I think we all agree, the MAN engines are great.
For exact notes, please include the engine model number, clutch model and what controls are used.
If your purchasing used, ensure all the past due maintenance is up. Survey very well.
Remember, no receipts; it did not happen.

Probably the big issue with used MAN engine purchases we have assisted here on YF, Over due, sometimes way over due, maintenance.

    Please keep us up.

The engines are MAN 2848 LE 401. Not sure of the other model numbers until I get to the boat. They were rebuilt in 2015 and deliver 680hp. Also ZF transmissions which don't know anything about. Thanks for the response!

    Ah the MAN V-10.
This seems to have turned into an interesting topic thru the years.
In My Opinion; Early V-10s did not do so well. Got a bad rap in early models.
Because of this not many were really discussed much.

In later discussions, seems MAN fixed their MAN-Grenade issues and later models seem to be rather solid.
Not big HP models but solid per design.
If properly maintained, you may not have any future issues.

Do some searches here to get extra luv/hate threads on da ole MAN V-10.

ZFs are fine, but I confess I cracked a case on a ZF 350 and they no longer make them so I replaced both with ZF 360s. I will let others comment on ZF vs Twin disc. If I remember correctly Dave Pascoe had an article critical of ZF and there aluminum construction. But to be clear based on my experience I would not hesitate to buy a boat with ZFs.

Sounds way over-priced. How long has she been on the market ? I've got a pair of 820 hp. Man's & ZF's in my 46 Bertram with many more hours. Did you mean, 1000 hrs. since the rebuild ?

CR, actually the last 8 in 2848 is what represent V8 blocks in MAN jargon - as opposed to 2840 for V10 and 2842 for V12.
And the LE401 is the second to last of their mechanical V8s, the very last being the LE403 that powers my boat (a 56 footer).
Rated respectively for 680 and 800 ponies at 2300rpm, and both widely regarded as among the most solid of MAN lineup.
IIRC, the latter was not yet available in '94, which more than likely is the only reason why Viking didn't install it.
Back then, for boats demanding 800+hp, builders had to step up to the D2840 LE401 mentioned by SplashFl , which might have been a bit of a problem in a 47 footer, because V10 are obviously longer than V8.
Apropos, I fully agree with him that in these engines a rebuild at one thousand hours is unheard of, unless starved of oil, badly overheated, or whatever.
So, it's definitely worth investigating at how many hours they were rebuilt, and why - on top of understanding what exactly was done, because "rebuilt" is a word used very generously (to put it politely...) with boats for sale! ;)

    What's the Viking's beam?

We have the third (423) iteration of those V-8 engines as described by @mapism , ours being electronic and 900 hp. We're pleased with the way they work...

But I ask about beam because the V configuration doesn't leave much center space in our engine room room to travel back and forth between engines. Not impossible with our 16' beam, just takes a bit of bob and weave, duck and fill, etc. but maybe something you'll want to consider.

"Rebuilt" and "a little over 1000 hrs on each" seems odd.

After all these years I never knew that.
Instead of looking it up in my library, I just quickly copied/pasted the model number in google and a picture came up, I counted 5 valve covers and thought I had it figured out.
I luv them, tinkered on a few but not an expert or MAN heavy.
    Thx

I'm encouraged by the feedback on the MAN engines. Sounds like they were rebuilt in 2015 and so have 1050 hrs on them since then.

So maybe useful questions to the seller would be how many hours were on the engines before they were rebuilt, and why were they rebuilt.

Probably won't be much space in between V engines, so if access is a thing you might worry about have a look at that first to see if adequate.
