Looks like now The Bahamas government is aiming its revenue machine gun at aviation…

they are trying to charge a $775 per flight using Bahamian airspace, regardless of aircraft size and passenger numbers.

this means that the cost for guests flying to family islands will skyrocket. Take Staniel Cay for instance… because there are no customs and immigration, every flight has to clear on the way in, usually Andros, Chub or Nassau. That’s THREE flights or $2325. In case of a charter, that would will be to bring the guests over and then another $2325 to pick them up!

the part that reeks of corruption is that the agency collecting some of the fees is a private company…. Anyone remember the mooring ball fiasco for a couple of years ago when a private company was awarded a contract to install hundreds of moorings on the Exumas? When it turned out the company principal was the husband of the prime minister communication director, the plan was cancelled and the company ordered to remove the 50 or so moorings already installed… they never did of course so now when approaching popular exumas anchorages at night you have to be very careful not to snag one which are about half a mile offshore….

the new fees are not official yet so maybe they ll come to their senses. Maybe… just maybe …
