    Next up: 2-3 weeks of deferred engine maintenance c/o Ace marine diesel. Coolers, injectors, turbos etc. Also decision on whether to let the Westerbroke live a little longer or bury it. As much as I’d love to replace it now I think I’m going to see how the oil samples look after ~35 hours of running. Would be nice to put off that $30k spend until I’ve at least sold the 42. Plus I still need bow chocks, a bottom job, and some other yard stuff.

    If the Westerbroke runs fine, then just run it till it breaks, oil samples who cares....... Phazor makes the closest footprint to most Westerbrokes. I had a 50' Post customer put in a Kohler, but a brand new Kohler never ran right, always computer issues. Dealers could never get it sorted.

    There was a thread somewhere about someone mounting a genset on rails where they could unpin it and slide it left and right to get to the front of the engines easier. After spending yesterday and this morning squeezing through multiple times to get to the AC pumps that sounds really nice, and would allow me to look at northern lights and other units that might have a larger footprint.

    I have a little insight; I recall sodium in the Westerbroke oil.
    Usually not a good event and warning of things to come.
    I have always hated the alloy exhaust manifold/heat-exchanger.
    I never liked those lil Mitsubishi engines. The two together rattles my crippled backbones.

    The reef material test could be a good example; Drop any gen-set into the ocean. Come back a year later, what engine assembly is still solid vs dissolved? You will not find the Westerbroke assembly.

    Yep, run it until it dies and then wait a while for the replacement to come in, or order its replacement now with scheduled down time replacement.

    Having fun with Shakespeare; To replace or not replace quickly, these are the questions.
    Weather it be smarter to replace now or later?

    Ah, but here is the RUB; That fraking Westerbroke could last, or lock up tomorrow, The new owner (Incoming) really has no history other than during the ships delivery trip.
    We await those oil lab reports.


    On the other hand; a year later+, were still in an ammonia broadcasting contest with NorthernLights. A 20kw end blew up 10 minuted past warranty, a new end blew up and everything connected to it a year later. Had the first end rewound and it has been running fine.
    NL denies both claims.
    Their failed replacement end is going thru autopsy now in S FL.

    As much as I luv NL, I may have some reservations on there warranty support.
    But I do luv the Shibaura engine they use.

    Nightmare scenario is the generator quits on the way to the Bahamas. This 50 is really not setup to be without AC power. Our 42 was great because the inverter would power the fridge and a few outlets for 24 hours+, even longer with good sun on the solar panels, and it had a backup 12v freshwater pump. Perfect for a quiet day of anchoring or fishing without the genset, or spending a quiet night on the hook when it’s cool enough to not need AC. If I lose the genset on the 50, I only have a 8-10 hours until smelly bait and lumpy milk.

    But I’ll probably risk it for a while and prioritize some of the other big expenses.

    Your 24V now?
    I have a simple 24v inverter I can donate to the cause.

    Have the oil samples been sent yet on the gen-set and mains?
    After your delivery run, perfect samples to submit.

    New oil samples to be pulled this week.

    The boat is 12V only, but if I added an inverter I’d probably want to do a dedicated bank
