Hi. I have been looking for a new boat between 45 to 58 feet. I have mainly been looking at older Hatteras Yacht fish boats. I came across a 1997 55 Neptunus. I had never heard of this brand before yesterday. In doing some research they appear to be well built, ocean going yachts built in Canada. The boat has Detroits with only about 1400 hours. The broker said they lived aboard and didnt use it much other than that but they have owned it about 3 years. I dont know if that is original or if she was repowered or if the engines were rebuilt. I have never seen Detroits that were not white but these were a dark blue. That said, I have only been looking at boats from the 1970's or early 1980's. The pics of the engine room look very clean. I am not familiar with "Twin Disc Marine Transmissions". Are they reliable with long life expectancy? Are there any known or common areas of concern with these boats like rotten stringers, leaking fuel tanks, leaking windows etc?

Your information is appreciated as I know pretty much nothing about this boat.

    Thank You

Your looking at that dock queen in Stuart FL?

    Neptunus boats are pretty good.
Twin Disk clutches are very good.
Sadly, that is the end of my good news.

In my opinion that Westerbroke gen-set is not an asset. It will start to eat up your checkbook when the hours start to ad up (every minute off of the dock).

I am a Detroit fan but I can not recommend a 92 series to a New Fun Guy. Kiss your check book good by when you start cruising.
This is not an asset either.
No longer in production. Engine part quality is a poker hand. Hard to find an ole phart that can really work on them.

I also can not recommend a DDEC system to any NFG or my best friend. Kiss your credit cards good by when you start cruising.
Only two support sorces; e-bay & Sturdy Corp (Used & Patched).
Just a few years ago, this was all high tech.

    There are 92 fans here.
    There are DDEC fans here.
There MAY even be Westerbroke fans here.
But I think we all can agree that this is expensive to operate and repair when needed.

Unless it continues to be a dock queen.

Thank you for that input. To answer your question, it is the Dock Queen in Stuart. Those are a alot of scary comments and will for sure weigh heavily on any decision we make.

I have bought Dock Queens before and always had gremlins to work out in the beginning. None of the boats I have ever owned were dock queens for as long as I have owned them. This one will not be a dock queen either. My current boat is a 430 Carver with 502 Crusader gas engines located on Lake Lanier in Ga and is for sale. In the 5 years I have owned it we lived aboard every weekend of the year and almost NEVER at the dock and usually anchored in a cove. Have you seen that boat in person? I would love to have a pair of eyes on it before making a 2 to 3 hour trip to go look at it.

    Thanks again for your knowledge.

    I'm closer to Jax.
I used to service one with Cat power in Jax. I did like the boat.

It's a cool weekday morning around here. Just finished my coffee and heading out.
I'm sure tonight other YF members will start responding to your thread.

I own a pair of 6v92 Detroits and have been happy with them but mine are only 550 hp. At 625 I wouldn't want anything to do with them. Even at 550 the cylinder kits only last about 3000 hours if you use most of the available horsepower. OEM Detroit parts prices have increased 300% in the past 16 months but thankfully we have a good aftermarket supplier for all the internal wear items. From what I understand the electronic parts for the DDEC system are nonexistent but I've never owned one and don't have first hand knowledge. There are lots of used parts around so you could convert them to mechanical if you are mechanically inclined.
