Here's a strange one... The documents for my CMY 46 show a 300 gallon fuel capacity, that includes the original owners manual and fuel system diagram. It's aft cabin, with the tank under the bed. When the I refuel with the sight glass near the bottom, it takes about 180 gallons. I've crawled around and measured the tank as best I can (it's roughly rectangular) and I don't see any obvious section of the tank, like a sump, that's much below the sight glass. Rough calculation of tank dimensions hints at closer to 200 gallons. This matters for trips to the SOCAL channel islands. Any thoughts? Would it have a 100 gallon reserve below the sight glass? Might there be a sump under the tank, or an aux tank somewhere in the stern? Thanks for any insight.
The sight glass is never at the bottom of the tank, usually several inches above the bottom of the tank. If the tank isn't very tall, but very long and/or wide. Those several inches could absolutely be 120 gallons (not saying they are for sure). I would suggest you look in ALL of your bilge access and know/note what is where. There could be another tank that is gravity fed. Look for a hose at the bottom of the tank. I wouldn't think a yacht of your size would only hold 180 gallons but it is possible. Can you ask the previous owner?
