Victron inverter monitoring

What are you looking to see? I think you need the inverter and also battery monitor to see everything. I also have a Cerbo GX plus display which allows me to see everything going on from both the display and my phone/computer.

For blue-tooth connect, I recall the BMV-712 battery module is needed.
I would hope the inverter would come with some op panel it-self.

I was just a Master-Volt jobber then moved to Magnum (Dimensions) power. They had original wimpy op panels and better panels were an option.
You may be in this same boat.

Here is what I can see in my portal but this is with a multiplex, BMV-712, and CerboGX. I don’t have my tank levels hooked up here but I do have my bilge pumps hooked up so I’ll get notifications if it ever goes off.

Use a Victron App on your smartphone rather than a remote?

I suppose you're referring to the remote panel that they call DMC (Digital Multi Control), which actually has more than a couple of LEDs, showing the charging mode and the error status (if any), plus a small 3-ways switch allowing to turn it on, off, and on as a charger only.
If that's what you've got, beware: I know it's a bit counterintuitive, but the knob is NOT meant to adjust the charging rate. What it does is limit the max amps the unit can draw from its AC input.
This can be useful when you are connected to a low power shore connection, to avoid tripping the pedestal breaker.
If/when your onboard AC equipment would demand more amps, the Multiplus will automatically top up whatever the shore power can supply by working as an inverter and drawing current from the batteries - which are otherwise kept charged, as soon as the overall AC drawing is lower than what the shore connection can supply.

Back to your question, I also have a Multiplus 24/3000 on my boat.
Initially, I installed it without any remote control panel, because it's in an easily reachable location, and I could see DC voltage and amp absorption on the OEM boat displays on the electrical panel, anyhow.
But recently, I bought a Cerbo GX, mostly for remote access/check when I'm not onboard.
And i can tell you, it's the best thing since sliced bread: it connects to the onboard wifi (which I already had for onboard cameras), and gives access to each and every functioning parameter, allowing also to change settings, if you wish. Personally, I prefer to not fiddle with electrical parameters while I'm not there to see what happens, but theoretically there's no limit to configuration changes, also remotely.
On top of all that, the Cerbo GX can work also as a sort of gateway for other units/sensors, like temperature, alarms, tanks level.
I've only used it for the Multiplus monitoring (so far), so I can't vouch for these extended functionalities, but there's plenty of positive feedbacks on the web also for those.

Just as examples, I'm attaching the VRM (Victron Remote Monitoring) screen I'm now accessing from home, which is similar to the one already posted by GY - BTW, he says he also has a BMV-712, but that's not required, and the Cerbo GX access makes it redundant, sort of.


The other shot below is what Victron call "Remote Console", also accessible via VRM, but mostly designed for onboard control, either with a smartphone/tablet, or one of the dedicated Victron touch screens, available in 5" and 7" size.

Our MultiPlus installation also includes a remote DMC (basic controls, sounds like what you have) and a BMV-712 for remote monitoring. There's a small physical remote-mount panel, but it's easier monitoring with the Victron app via Bluetooth.

Before you do, there's a couple of things worth considering.

First, the Cerbo GX was recently upgraded to the so-called MK2 version.
It's a bit tricky to distinguish them, but the few hardware differences are actually rather convenient, so you'd better look for a MK2, even if any dealer who still has old units in stock will tell you that they are the same...

Second, if you don't like using the smartphone or tablet while onboard, and prefer to have a fixed touch screen instead, a more compact alternative to the touch screen connected to the Cerbo GX is the so-called Ekrano GX, which essentially is the same as the larger 7" touch screen of the Cerbo GX, but thicker and with the same electronics/connections of the Cerbo GX integrated in one standalone unit.

FWIW, I went for the Cerbo GX alone, using whatever I have at hand: mobile/tablet/PC - both remotely and while I'm onboard.
And so far I never missed a fixed screen onboard. But each to their own, of course.

Feel free to ask for any installation doubts, whenever you will work on it. Far from pretending to be a Victron expert, but I did spend some time to understand their logic and features, during the installation of the Multiplus and the Cerbo GX.

Well, I can't be positive about that.
I just re-checked the generic ".com" Victron website, and it confirms my understanding of what the knob does, i.e. set the max AC input (see here).
But of course, if you have evidence that it behaves differently in your installation, what do I know...?

I suppose you meant from 10 to 20 (or 20 to 10), right?
Anyhow, the behavior shown in your photos actually confirm that the knob function is to limit AC absorption from the shore connection, if you think about it.
I mean, your AM-meters on the right are related to AC, not DC.
So, what happens is that if the Multiplus needs say 20A of AC for bulk charge, by limiting the AC shore to 10A you are actually limiting ALSO the battery recharging, because the Multiplus can't draw as much AC as it needs for DC bulk charge.
In other words, the reduced DC charging rate is just a consequence of the AC limit chosen with the knob.

There is indeed also a specific option for limiting the charging rate regardless of how much AC is available - in fact, my unit can recharge up to 70A DC at 24V, but I forced a 35A limit because for my usage I care more about battery life than speed of charge.
I just can't remember by heart where/how to set this limit, and ATM I'm not on my notebook, where I have all the programs and manuals.
But I can find out later and tell you about it, if you're interested...

I'm thinking of jumping on this bandwagon.
Is this thing basically plug and play or do I have a lot of set up?
I'm not adverse to setup but always like to know how deep it is before I drive-in.

I'm afraid the answer is it depends.
I wouldn't call the Cerbo GX (or any other Victron device for that matter) 100% plug and play, but if you're happy with the basic functions there's no need to fiddle with configuration/customization a lot.
OTOH, the possibilities are endless, so depending on which other components (either Victron or others) you want the Cerbo GX to handle, you might need to invest some time and read some boring manual pages - which BTW aren't the more straightforward I ever came across...
But once you grasp their logic a bit, it's a very valuable tool indeed!

I have been a fan of the others.
Some mfgs websites offer their manuals.
It would be a smart shopper to read and compare the different options between the brands and determine what you want/need or can live with.

So far, I'm still in luv with my Magnum install.
That is not to say it is better, just easy for me.

I have a few old Desktop computers on board. Two are always running.
Never an issue in switching to/from the dock, gen-sets or inverter. Our big screen TVs don't blink once during any switchover.

20 years ago, I actually had big APC UPS units on board, They were overly critical and did not like the gen-sets or (first installed) inverter input and would die before accepting ACv from them. That is when I discovered bypass switches but later, just removed the UPS units.
So our Magnum inverter is now our ships UPS. All good.

So why did you go Victron?
