I've replaced the turbo on my 1997 671 TIB and understand that it needs to be pre oiled which I'm able to do by pouring some oil in the oil inlet on the turbo. I've also been told by a car guy to crank the engine over until it builds oil pressure before letting it start. Is this also the correct thing to do in my situation. Not sure how long it would take at cranking rpm to build pressure.

You can "dead" crank a 671 by holding the stop button while you crank for 10 seconds. Wait 30 seconds before repeating. This is usually done to help with cold weather starts but will also pre-lube everything. Probably not needed but once is plenty for pre-lube.

Interesting so many folks bring up this "dead crank" thing.
    Bunk..
Not all boats have the starting switches set-up this way. My Bertram and many other boats we have serviced thru the years will not allow for this function.
So instead of blindly giving instructions, ask if this function is available..

2-stroke Detroit turbo oil feeder lines tap off of the same terminal block the oil pressure senders and alarm switches are mounted to.
By the time the engine starts normally, the turbo has oil.
This would be SOP for boats, equipment and big trucks.

I have replaced just a few DDC, JD and Cat turbos.
    I may have a clue.
