An article in the New York Times was brought to my attention that should make anybody who cruises the waters of the US turn red with anger. It is a long article but it is worth the time to read. Here is a taste of what you will read. New radios were installed in the open boats, they weren't waterproof, so they all shorted out. http://www.nytimes.com/2006/12/09/us/09ship.html?pagewanted=1&_r=1 Enjoy... I want to credit Panbo-The Marine Electronics blog for making me aware of this.
At least the US have funds to replenish the fleet! The UK coastguard RNLI are run entirely from donations as they are classed as a charity. The Customs Cutters are somewhat ancient, with completely inadequate government support (I'm ex-customs and lost many crew!!). It goes to show that both UK & US governments have got their heads in the clouds, or elsewhere!!!
We can't afford to waste money like this. We're still fighting that black hole Iraq. I have to think this was a crony deal because no one but a fool would allow a boat building company to design airplanes, the reverse of which we have here.
Catmando here is an update on the Coast Guard modernzation from the Washington Post March 2008. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/03/11/AR2008031102802.html
Anyone surprised by this has never worked for a government institution or has never known anyone who does. Welcome to our modern world.
Thanks LW. Where are these vessels being built? We have at least three big yards; Trinity in Gulfport Ms., Christiansen in Washington State and Intermarine in Savannah, Ga. Can any of them handle ships this big, or are there bigger yards I don't know about? I know about $40 hammers and $200 toilet seats but this many orders of magnitude worse. I wish Seymour Hersh or Greg Palast could do some investigative reporting on this because they would get to the truth of it.
Bushism,... ..., writ large. Used to call it Grantism: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grantism But need to keep up with the times. If it weren't for his advanced tax policies (no more "death taxation" - thank you joe 6-pack) really had nothing to offer. No worries, the United States of America will reign supreme no matter what happens. Sheesh!
