bow dinghy davit smoked it’s motor in the middle of lowering the 10’ rib into the water yesterday. I can’t tell the model exactly but it looks identical to the UMT 600 eco. It is manual extend and rotate with an electric motor driven winch. The davit has an emergency manual crank option, which is how I got the dinghy the rest of the way into the water. There’s a whole in the side of the boom where you can engage the gear with a D-profile shaft and hand-crank it. I was able to get a 5/8” socket on the shaft and turn it but it slipped a lot and was a huge PITA. Question is - does anyone know what the proper tool is for this? All of the winch handles I can find (including what I have on board for the windless emergency manual operation) have the sailboat style male “star” fitting. I need something with a female D-profile, again, approximately 5/8”.
The handles are used on car trailers. Auto stores should carry them. https://www.trailertek.com/trailer-parts/winches/winch-spares
I looked at those but unfortunately that style won’t work because the shaft is recessed - have to access it through a hole in the side of the boom. Anything much bigger than a 5/8” socket won’t fit through the hole. There has to be something though because they put that home there for a reason. The winch is a Dutton Lainson. This ratcheting winch handle from their site looks like the closest thing but it doesn’t look like it has a D shaped socket. May just give UMT a call on Monday and see if they have a recommendation. Dinghy can sit in the water for a few days while I sort this out. https://www.dutton-lainson.com/proddetail.php?prod=70347
Can you take a 3/8 or 1/2 inch speed wrench and reform the end to fit the required shape? The ole GoLo winch is the only brand I'm familiar with. Good but I fear that company is having problems. Ideas on fixing your electric winch?
I just need to call either UMT or Dutton tomorrow and verify the part number for the winch. I originally thought I was going to replace just the motor but it seems easier to replace the whole thing. It shouldn’t be terrible to change out just have to remove the boom to get access. I consider myself lucky the winch is still in production. I’ll ask them about the handcrank tool as well. Will post what I learn for the next person who stumbles over this. There’s a post from about 5 years ago with the same problem, same unit. Sounds like they got it fixed in a day.
