    How strictly enforced and what are the clear rules for Navigation lights on power boats over 39ft and less than 65ft. I am replacing the masthead light on my Cabo 48. The boats Nav light system is 24v and the Pipewelders placed the red and green side lights in the corners of the hard top. They placed the white stern light in the rear centerline of hard top. Very clean and nice led install. My challenge is two fold. One being that the boat is 24v the led light options for a proper masthead anchor light is limited. Second is height related. I go into a boathouse and the top of my radar is very close the to hitting the door already. Also given that the side lights are mounted in the top corners of hard top if I use the 3ft height separation to masthead I would have to place light on 3ft pole.

    After going down this rabbit hole of research 9 months ago when I was in the beginning stages of refit I ordered a Lopolight that fit all the criteria and appeared high quality. Now it is time to mount the light and if I have to adhere to height of 3ft above side lights I will need to place on antenna ratchet mount so I can tilt back coming and going from shed. If I don't I can incorporate in the fwd thermal camera mount and place at same level as radar.

    I have looked at build photos of countless boats and Viking places the light high yet many of the custom boat builders appear to not mount the light at the highest point of vessel or 3ft above sidelights. Curious what others opinions are of this. Thanks.

    Other than class/flag, I've never had anyone take a measurement. But you can be sure you'll be measured if there were ever an incident at night.

    The rules are pretty clear, see below, and There are no height requirements for the mast head light. On my 53 Hatteras MY the masthead light is on the forward slanted face of the FB housing, barely higher than the sidelights and well below the rest of the FB.

    the only light which has to be at the top since it needs to be visible all around is the anchor light. That may have to be on a ratchet mount.

    personally I don’t like sealed led fixtures as when they fail, you can’t replace the bulbs. I have standard perko fixtures and out LED bulbs which I can replace in 30 seconds. Yeah I know…. LED last forever. BS

    (a) “Masthead light” means a white light placed over the fore and aft centerline of the vessel showing an unbroken light over an arc of the horizon of 225 degrees and so fixed as to show the light from right ahead to 22.5 degrees abaft the beam on either side of the vessel, except that on a vessel of less than 12 meters in length the masthead light shall be placed as nearly as practicable to the fore and aft centerline of the vessel.

    (a) A power-driven vessel underway shall exhibit:
    (i) a masthead light forward;
    (ii) a second masthead light abaft of and higher than the forward one; except that a vessel of less than 50 meters in length shall not be obliged to exhibit such light but may do so;
    (iii) sidelights; and
    (iv) a sternlight.

    I'm at my desk looking it up.
    Let make sure I'm reading correctly;
    You want to install your combination steaming (mast head) AND anchor light and worried about the vertical distance above your separate red-green lights?

    So far, I found this in the annex;
    3c The masthead light of a power-driven vessel of 12 metres but less than 20 metres in length shall be placed at a height above the gunwale of not less than 2.5 metres.

    Anchor lights, Rule 30
    (a). A vessel at anchor shall exhibit where it can best be seen:
    (b). A vessel of less than 50 metres in length may exhibit an all-round white light where it can best be seen instead of the lights prescribed in paragraph (a) of this Rule.

    Annex 1

    (i). The masthead light or lights prescribed in Rule 23(a) shall be so placed as to be above and clear of all other lights and obstructions except as described in subparagraph (ii).

    Think I found something;

    (g). The sidelights of a power-driven vessel shall be placed at a height above the hull not greater than three quarters of that of the forward masthead light. They shall not be so low as to be interfered with by deck lights.
    (h). The sidelights, if in a combined lantern and carried on a power-driven vessel of less than 20 metres in length, shall be placed not less than 1 metre below the masthead light.

    I read this; A combo red-green must be spaced 1 metre below.

    Your red-greens are separate. No worries.

    I've re-read that (g) line a few times now.
    Government lingo can be fun.

    not greater than three quarters of that of the forward masthead light

    This could be a concern.

    Example;
    Your side lights are 7' over the gunnel.
    Yep, near 3' spacing to the steaming light.
    Interesting.

    Trust the language of the measurements to the larger height and stick with it. Something happens and an attorney will be looking for a failure on your part in spite of his client's reckless boating.

    I think Ken answered your first question best.

    So it appears I am correct in my interpretation that to cover my bases I need to mount my masthead light as the highest point of the vessel and with vertical separation from red and green lights of 3ft. Looks like I need to stick with plan of ratchet mounting.

    There sure is limited options in 24v for this spec of nav light.

    I think so, and err on the side of 3 feet 1 inch, not the other way...

    Crazy, I never thought about this height stuff before.
    Makes ya want to stay factory? Maybe there was an exception filed by Cabo.
    But once you modify it, Any exceptions are gone.

    Good thread. Think we all learned something today.

    To further confuse things Cabo shipped boats without a hard top and that was specd and built by delivering dealer. Cabo wired everything up and had a nice box in helm for dealer installed nav lights to connect to. My boat was Pipewelders rigged with small aluminum post and perko light. Light had served its useful life so I planned to upgrade but in attempting to do so in LED has proven costly. And yes the Pipewelders fitted light post was 3ft tall. Every hard top builder probably did it a bit different and some put the side lights lower on boat so that changes things a bit as well.

    It s ridiculous. How do you define height above the hull anyway… from the deck?
    many boats have the factory installed masthead light fairly close in height to the sidelights

    I'm aweigh from my desk and can not copy/paste the line, but the annex did explain to measure from the main deck / gunnel below the steaming light.

    Here it is;

    Annex I - Positioning and Technical Details of Lights and

    Shapes

    1. Definition

    . The term “height above the hull” means height above the uppermost continuous deck. This height shall be measured from the position vertically beneath the location of the light.

    Got the masthead anchor light dialed in on the 2nd go around. Given the need to be above my red and green lights which are in the hardtop corners as well as above my radar I needed to mount light on a ratchet mount to go in and out of boat shed. First time around I had digital antenna make me a custom fiberglass extension at 30 inches. Threaded onto ratchet mount and light bolted into GPS base at the top. Looked good but had too much vibration when you bumped it. ie 4foot chop on the bow at 30 knots. So round 2 was heavy duty ratchet mount into 3/4 base pad as well as using small aluminum pmate in hardtop for center rigger base. Had a 1.25 inch ss post weeded to ratchet mount and GPS base st the top. Thru bolted light to GPS base. Looks right and feels right. ✔️ ✅️.

    There is a surprising small number of options in the 12m to 20m 24v LED space.
