There are online entities that will make finer pleated type filters any size.

If you put a finer filter in place of the existing, does that restrict the air flow ?
    It must to some degree.
I am already thinking of increasing the size of the return air grill for my FWD A/C unit and could go even larger for a finer filter.
I've got 2 filters already, one at the grill and another comes on the A/C unit right at the evaporator.

Although at home I use the highest rated filters, on the boat their only MERV 8's as I considered possible restrictions. The 8's don't seem to restrict much if any but the 3 new systems are all only a few months old and when purchased was told they have much higher blower capacities then in the past. Probably true as on a 1-5 I rarely put fan speeds above 2 or 3 bars.

When we installed A/C systems, we use the better mfg filter on the evap.
AND a large return filter on the cabinet insides before the sound baffle.
We try to go with a finer filter but much larger in surface area where we could.

Our last installs included the 4 inch deep box filters.
Found easier to fit in smaller areas, lasted a long while, never reduced airflow (manometer tested) and the customers found it easier to replace.

Another thing that gets dirty , for us older boat owners, is the coil.
My remote air handlers were all clogged up from years of use when I got the boat.
I have original 1981 cruisair units.
Had to remove the five blade fans/motors and clean the coil “fins” with a small S/S wire brush . Lots of crud came out.
    Made a big difference.

I don’t have blowers all fan units .
Which the motors and blades can be gotten from Grainger also.

i’m friends with a refrigeration guy in my yard he and I already replaced one compressor only (Tecumseh) and I’ve had to rebuild the double pole electrical box for the two remote compressors and two three knob controls. Got the double pole relay thing from Grainger for 25 bucks…problem solved.

I just have filters on the return section to the air handler, 3M jobs I get from the hardware store in town.

Still working fine. 42 years old .
R22 units , the good stuff!
l like when the ladies walk / stand by the discharge grille…o_O. Burrr..cold.

Thank Goodness no leaks anywhere I’ve been very lucky.

Evaporator (evap) and Coil seem to be interchangeable terms here.
The rear fans were on our Bertram and still using one of them in the forward cabin.

Yes, you are lucky using SS brushes. I ripped one of ours (Uh Oh) with a metal comb tool.
Use plastic brushes and plastic evap (coil) combs.

Again, Better filters before the air-box and the coil, helps a lot.

Yes I got the terms mixed up.
From here on out we’ll just call them “Jawns” ,or the air Jawns. Where the cold comes out.
( Thisis a crude Philadelphia slang word to describe something that you don’t know the proper name/Terminology for. If you don’t know the name for what you’re talking about, just call it a “Jawn”, nice right? )

I used a wimpy brush so I didn’t rip anything up. But , yes it could happen.
Gentle up and down strokes. No jabs .
    Easy does it.

My wife calls it "thingie" . Takes me a few to figure Whisky Tango Foxtrot she is talking about.

I fear different terminology is some of the reasons we get into some spaz threads. Sometimes we are already on the same page and don't realize it.

Oh, I'm old... I do understand
I'm going to visit that other boat forum and tick off the regulars over there again.
Keeps me calm for when I visit back to this site.

Oh, another boat forum site just sent me a note, have not been on a while and they miss my abuse,, or something like that. I'll head over there and rock those wind heads.
