40' Sport Fish Quad Outboards

    Has Anyone or does anyone have Experience with a 40' Sport fish with Quad 400 Verados or quad 300 Verados? Im looking for prop info, a decent starting point, if anyone has any experience. My Hull is a Buddy Davis

    Talk to Ken at Prop Gods. He is usually really good with outboard propellers.

    If your Mercuries were on the racing side, a call to them will get you lots of information. I don't know if there is a similar call to Mercury to help you on the Verado side. I would think there is someone, but finding them may be impossible.

    You talk quad 400 or 300, do you own engines or are you looking to buy at this point?

    You might play with their performance bulletins. I found a Yellowfin with 400's using Enertia ECO Stainless Steel 3 Blade 22 pitch on a 39' boat.

    If these are engines you're thinking of buying, I'd definitely look at the Racing versions. We just ordered three 400R's and I know another person here who just ordered a 300R.

    OB, what motivated you to buy the racing versions? I assume the potential performance gains are atleast part of it. Did not know if they are high strung and don't offer as long a life. You seem to do a lot of research prior to your purchases so interested in what you learned regarding the Racing versions.

    I believe it's the only way the 400's come. Racing versions are hand assembled, a lot shorter wait times from the Racing department than Mercury outboard. I ordered a 300r for the wait time reason and the motor puts out 326-328hp and 200 rpms higher red line.

    You can get a 400 Verado non racing. Only difference between the 400 Verado and the 400R is programming; the motor itself is the same. You're correct on lead times the racing division is less lead time but even still they are a nightmare to get. Our lead time went from 7-10 weeks in the fall to now 30-50 weeks for 400's and don't even try for 450R's or 600's they are out even further.

    We chose the 400R initially over the 400 Verado, largely because of the gearcases and just the overall data and leaning of the builder. However, that led us to the 450R for which there is no matching Verado. We believe it's the future and will quickly slide over and have a 450 V8 in the Verado line. Meanwhile, we like the V8 and the fact it has significantly more torque than the 400. It does all this without adding tremendous weight at the 450R only weighs 689 lbs vs. 668 for the 400 Verado. We had already decided to only go with triples and not really interested in top speed, just good dependable performance where day to day it's not pushed. Must give one additional piece of information, our center console is only for crew use, not for us. They use it a lot when home but they treat it very well. They will be going from a 39' Contender with triple Yamaha 300's to a 39' Seavee with triple Mercury 450R's. However, it's not like a boat run hard all the time or abused. We were just sold on the V8 and on the entire design and build of the 450R.

    Now you may be after pure speed and most thing we would be, but we just didn't feel like a 39' CC needed quads to achieve our goals.
