I ve always liked Icoms when it comes to VHFs and just had a new M510 installed on the 110 I run, replacing one of the oudated and clumsy Simrads.

I really like it... easy to use, clear menus, tons of functions incl anchor alarm. Very nice clear screen

icom has an app (for for droid and iOS) which allows you to use the VHF from your smart phone. At this time the app isn’t available in the US but should be in about a week. I m not a big fan of tech for the sake of being cool but it sounds like something that could be practical so you can stay in touch with a Dockmaster while docking from an aftdeck station for example.

only negative so far is that to connect to a hailer you need to install an external icom box.

    glad I upgraded.

    Humm,, Clumsy??
I have been changing from older Icoms to later Simrads for near the same reason.
That is a nice looking radio face.

How’s the speaker/sound quality on the 510? I’m thinking about upgrading this winter. My existing ICOM is good but my second radio which is a cheaper Standard is horrible. It is so tinny sounding I can’t hardly stand it. I like to monitor 16 and 13 at the same time with two radios as we have lots of commercial traffic that use 13. I assume you got the AIS option? What’s the unit to the right of the radio?

.to the right of the icom is the control for the FLIR

I don’t know how the built in speaker is since it s connected to an overhead remote speaker. The previous icoms I ve used all had great speakers.

Just installed a ICOM M510 as a second VHF to my excellent M605. Sound is very good, IOS App link to cell phones is basic but nice for radio and intercom functions. Was going to go with Vertex Cortex but several friends are having far too many issues to consider it as a reliable option. Color screen is also a big plus. UI is similar to the M605 so low learning curve. I have Command Mics on both.

Icon Finally released the app for iOS and I tried it.

big disappointment... if you are using the hailer module, the VHF wifi must be set to built in mode. Problem is that the built in wifi is weak and doesn’t reach more than 30 or 40 feet thru the deck. It also has a client mode which uses the boat wifi and considerably extend range but that doesn’t allow use of the hailer.

and switching back n forth means having to reconfigure the hailer connection

why couldn’t icom have just used a hard wired hailer connection ?

I was thinking about adding the IC-M510 this winter. I am also replacing the standalone hailer. My reference is to have the Hailer separate. The bummer for me is that you need the external module for a NMEA 2000 connection. I may go 605 instead especially after hearing the feedback on the IOS app. Does anybody have any feedback on the Standard Horizon VLH-3000? or even better anyone selling a vintage Standard Horizon LH10?

I have both radios. The M605 is my primary radio and connected to the hailer. It is an excellent radio, very high build quality and the color screen is very nice. If I had to choose one, it would be the M605 over the M510, especially if hailer management is important - no need for separate components - probably similar in cost due to need for M510 for the separate hailer component. My M510 is located on my aft deck with a second Command Mic in the pilot house.
