Boat US-Geico just emailed me a quote that's nearly 5% on a SF I'm looking at and last month they increased the premium on my 25 Contender 12% and dropped the "agreed" value nearly 14%. Another agent quoted $3.33 per 100. hull value. When the Boat US renewal arrives it goes straight to the shredder.

I’m getting quotes from another broker recommended by cleanslate. Broker says they have several companies that will cover Alaska. I’ll report back after I get quotes.

You can try American Modern Insurance Group, they claim all of US and Canada up to 64ft.

So here’s the latest; I finally got another quote and it was almost half at 1.1% (vs. 2%) and the deductible is 2% vs 5% . So just based on premium and deductible its a no brainer. However, the policy has this listed in it which gives me pause:

    10. It is agreed and understood that contrary to any other policy conditions or language that this policy
does not provide any coverage for any loss, damage, claims or expense attributable to, or resulting
directly or indirectly, in whole or with any other cause or causes from: delamination, debonding,
separation of laminate, deflection, warpage or shrinkage, water damage, hidden defect, latent defect,
defect in construction, defect in design or manufacturer design, faulty workmanship, defect in material
to the hull, hull coring, decking, stringers, bulkheads, tabbing or any attachments thereto unless such
damage is the direct result of fire, collision, allision, grounding, or stranding of the yacht that occurs
during the policy period. For the purposes of this endorsement, the hull, deck, superstructure, fixtures
and fittings, and all other components attached thereto are considered one integral part.

So if I understand this correctly I have no coverage if something lets go at the dock like a thru-hull or shaft seal. And I have no idea about theft and assume that isn't covered either? Do ay of you have similar clauses and exclusions?
Lastly, my original broker so he can get me this policy. It is convenient to have everything in one place with one broker but I'm a bit miffed that he has access to this other underwriter but didn't get a quote. I also don't feel right getting a quote from another broker and then using that quote but not give him the business. Thoughts?

I think you can see why he didn't quote you. May be other reasons too.

Anyone have any experience with American Modern for insurance? I received a competitive quote from them via a local broker so looking for some real world feedback if anyone has any. Thanks!

I use Travelers in Seattle and have been happy with them for past decade but they didn't want to quote new boat until it was on West Coast. While in FL I am with Markel. I use a broker out of San Diego who specializes in the marine industry and have been pleased with his effort and knowledge.

I have American Modern but have no experience in using them. Thankfully. I would also like to hear from others that had to use them.

Lew, how long have you been with them? Some of the online complaints I found suggest they dramatically increase premiums sometimes regardless of claim history. Have you experienced this? The rest of the reviews I found are fair to poor which is pretty typical of what you find online for just about all insurance companies.

Adam, I have been with them for 4 years. They do raise you yearly, but I never felt it was overly excessive. With all the rate increases on insurances it hard to tell what is acceptable.
