I recently purchased a 1980 Post 42. Can't wait for launch day next week. Wife fell in love with it so we went up about 9 feet in length. Just a couple questions....

Do the engines each draw fuel from separate tanks or is there a valve to switch tanks (6-71 TI's)

Where is the factory location for the holding tank? It doesn't have one now as it has the Raritan Electro Scan system. I'm going to intsall a holding tank eventually. I am slipped in Winthrop, MA. and it looks like we are in a NO DISCHARGE ZONE....

I've been following the other threads but I may still have some other questions

    Thanks for your help!

All of that will be very evident as you look around, but in 40 years prior owners may have done all sorts of things. Generally both tanks feed both motors, but many boats have a cross-over with valve that enables you to draw from one side. I'd be very surprised to find a holding tank removed. Look for the pump out deck plate. Your tank should be below and inside from there. Most manufacturers make it a short straight run from there. Most inland water of the U.S. are No Discharge Zones, but some (like Nantucket) are really strict. Good luck with the new boat.

I've looked all over for the pump out. I'll be up there tomorrow and will take another look.

I just did a little looking around the net. Specs say you have a 45 gal. holding tank. I located a couple of pics; one showing a fitting port side on the bow (which I would expect to be the water fill) and another just forward of the house on the port passageway which I believe would be the pump out. I think that would be about in line with your head. From that I'd expect to find the holding tank below the sole in the head or in the hall where I saw a hatch in one pic. Hope that helps.

Usually, port motor draws from forward tank. Starboard and gen draw from aft tank. your boat may or may not have a fuel transfer pump between tanks. Have to search. Over so many years, someone could have installed valves for both to draw off of either tank. Have to make sure fuel return from engines matches the tank. gets a bit complicated, which is why I think Post didn't do that.

There was no factory location for holding tanks that long ago. I had an 84 43 with only an electra san unit. had to design and install the whole holding tank system. Pretty sure you are starting from scratch with installing a tank. Seems like most are installed under a bed. Probably in your master stateroom. I used this company 17 years ago and the tank is still perfect: https://www.oceanlinkinc.com/marine-tanks/holding-tanks-water-tanks they will customize the tank which is really helpful.

My 42 had only electrosan. It did have pump out and vent fittings with nothing connected. removed it and installed a holding tank, new macerating fresh water fed toilet, plumbed it to a y valve for either pump out or overboard for 3 mile out discharge. I put whatever the biggest standard size holding tank I could fit in where the lectrasan unit was .. it’s not huge but it’s plenty big enough. It’s in bow end of engine room between the center stringers behind the back of the electrical panel under the stairs.
