Should this be under YF's "Waypoints?"

I received a referral for a charter for scattering ashes. The widow is paying for all of the children and grandchildren to fly to FLL and be together to scatter her husband's ashes as he had requested. Very nice. But, the total # of passengers will be 19. That makes for an expensive charter to go out to scatter ashes (downwind of guests of course) for what could be a one-two hour charter. I have heard that ashes are considered trash and therefore, it requires being 3 miles offshore.

Does anyone have any helpful information or any leads for a "boat rental" for 19 people? The widow is spending a lot on travel and accommodations for everyone and is low budget on the vessel and does not need a yacht, just a means of transportation.

    Thanks!

    Judy

My Dad's ashes were scattered at sea a couple of years ago. A very small affair of 4 done from a varnished racing powerboat he had designed.

Sadly a girlfriend's father passed away in Antigua. The crematorium had broken down, so a full body burial was planned at sea. Like in the 18th century, the body was sewn into a canvas sailcloth and slid into the sea from a plank. Sadly not enough lead-weights were added to sink the body and it floated. We were mostly in small Boston Whalers and Zodiacs and had to drive around and around in circles to create a wake to sink the body. Very undignified. Much crying and tears.

Judy, maybe a tourist tour boat or a couple of smaller charter boats would be cheaper, with drinks and a lunch at a restaurant.

Thanks, Fish. What an anguishing story!

Thanks, Ken. I called SunDream whom I've used before. It's a good recommendation and appreciated. However, they have a 4 hr minimum as well as food charge. Their minimum will run around $4k.

    Hi Judy,

We had my father and mother both buried at sea. We used this service and they did a superb job. This is near San Diego though. We buried my mother five years to the day after we buried my father. The captain was able to get us to the exact place that we buried my father.

Carelm -- thanks for the post. It gave me the idea to do a search for similar services in FLL. Found one!

It's amazing that YF always comes through for me. Thanks to all!

    Love you guys!

Another idea is to charter a drift fishing boat. If cost is a concern.

Thanks for the links. After Carelm's suggestion, that's what I found plus a few ya'll have added.

My good deed has now become one shared by fellow YF posters.

I spread my brother's ashes as I left Fire Island inlet on a Florida transport. I used to have a dog named Crew who worked on my boat in Ft. Lauderdale. His ashes were spread by the Hall of Fame marina. Both where they spent their happiest days.:)

You didn't tell us your brother's name, but I like your dog's name. Sounds like a new thread begging: Pet Names for Boaters

Kevin. What else would you name a dog that works on a boat? That dog was one heck of a shill. He drew in the tourists from 200' away. Probably the best dog I ever had except when driving in the rain. He chased the windshield wipers. :D

I will be dam! NYCAP123 You do have a heart, you like/love dogs. Wife & I had 12 Goldens over 45 years that loved the water and could not keep them off the many different boats we have had. We now have 2 Corgi’s that are starting to realize if they want to be with us, they must learn to like the boat. I agree I think we need a new thread, Dogs & Yachting, or something like that.

All ours were Heinz 57's.:D First one a golden mix. Best temperament. Shannon, after the river in Ireland. Both captains here turned in our tickets to care for animals. Sometimes PITA NY'ers can surprise you.
Maybe the Mods can split the last few posts off to a different thread so it can be searched? (hint hint)
