Every year three to four ships a year go aground in the Great Lakes. They lose their engines and have no steering so all they can do is drop their anchors and hope for the best. They are usually out of the channel and may delay shipping for a few days. They will bring in a tugs and barges to off load some of the cargo.
Several of the ships in this thread were both born and will die in the Great Lakes. The 1000' lakers can't ever get downstream of the Welland Canal.
Next few days I will post reports on three major accident on the Welland Canal On August 25/74 the United States Steel vessel (Steelton) struck Bridge 12 in Port Robinson Canal was shut down for 15 days https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Port_Robinson,_Ontario
On October 14/1985 the west wall of Lock 7 collapsed and canal was closed for 24 days. https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1985-11-07-fi-3257-story.html
