How do zero speed stabs work?

    Generally you fit larger fins for zero speed operation. And, there's generally an Electric hydraulic pump (in addition to the engine driven one(s)) that comes on and keeps the hydraulic pressure where it needs to be for the fins to operate with the motors off. GPS tells the stabilizer system it's not moving, and the gyro compass or whatever it is the system uses to measure roll and have the fins act accordingly. Electric fins would just use the electricity they normally use.

    A regular fin, non zero, uses the velocity of the water going past and acts similar to a rudder to control boats motion. In zero's, the shape of the fin creates lift as it actuates thru it's cycle so it's not as dependent on water velocity. And it's not as simple as a retrofit to upgrade, fins are larger, hull stresses higher, and as was mentioned above, requires a large electric driven hyd pump, which MAY require an upgrade in generator sizing.
