The compass is bad for the ZF JMS joystick. Boat has electric steering and ZF joystick and we have searched this boat high and low and cannot find the compass ANYWHERE. Does anyone know where it is? Can't find it or autopilot compass.

LOLOLOL, autopilot compass is still there, but nobody seems to know where San Lorenzo puts them and we've searched everywhere.

You could ask the company, but my guess is that they would be installed by a journeyman and therefore may have no standard location. I'd suggest following the wires.

Btw, have you checked under the bunks? Good spot not likely to be interfered with.

I would look carefully under the floor panels of the corridor that goes to the master cabin, and/or of the stbd guest cabin floor.
But don't expect to find it in immediate view: you might well need a torch and stick your head under each opening.

I've checked every single center bilge, with a light and thoroughly, which are a bear to get the floor panels up because it has a delicate textured wood floor and the panels fit tightly, and there's no way to get a hold on them to get them up, it's not there. I've looked in every overhead panel, which also are a bear to get down because they all slide in together, but San Lorenzo chose to use these two screws with large heads on the end to keep the last one in, but then San Lorenzo stripped the holders (nuts) that are glued in the panel/woodwork on almost every single one of them by driving the screws in with a drill, so screw and holder turn together and don't come out. Then San Lorenzo U.S. told me it's in the ceiling above the lower helm, well there isn't enough height there either. THIS is why everyone HATES Italian boats. Also pulled master ceiling apart, galley ceiling, other ceilings aren't deep enough for it. This is why everyone HATES Italian boats. The F'ING compass is supposed to be installed at water line level, in the center of the boat and midships PER ZF SPECS for the JMS joystick. SO far have had the ZF tech out and spent 12 hours @ $$$$$, I've spent 12 hours with him, tearing the entire boat apart, and still have not found it and it's an 8 year old boat.

    Call San Lorenzo in Italy.

How can anyone in the industry hate boats that create 12 hours of income for such easy jobs?
I'd expect anyone but the owners to LOVE the thing! And SL owners can't be penny-pinchers anyway... :D
But you should have a suction cup with a handle specifically meant for lifting those floor panels, among other tools supplied with the boat.

Back to the point, if you only checked the center bilges in the corridor, chances are that it's inside one of the two guest cabins (NOT the VIP at the bow).
As I previously said, I'd look at the stbd one first, because I half remember that also other cables like the one for the transducer go down from the main helm on stbd side.
The requirement of placing the compass along the centerline is theoretical, and almost irrelevant in practice.
I wouldn't waste time on ceilings anyhow, regardless of what SL U.S. suggested.

'Scuse the pedantry, but it's Sanlorenzo (one word), even if often shortened in "SL".

I don't speak Italian. And the U.S. Sanlorenzo emailed the factory with the HIN number and this is exactly what the factory told them. It's in the pilot house overhead.

Far from pretending to know better than the factory, but saying that I would be surprised if they really placed it in the p/house overhead is an understatement.
I for one am really curious to hear where you will eventually find it.
    Good luck!

In the bilge, at the foot of the master stateroom bed, is exactly where ZF recommends putting it and would've been a logical place both for running the wiring from the E.R., AND where it is supposed to be mounted per ZF specs. And, the hatch there is under carpet that comes right up and actually has a pull handle.

Because I don't like working 12 hours, on things that are supposed to come apart easily to access areas of the vessel and don't come apart easy, tearing the entire boat apart, as well as working 12 hours and accomplishing NOTHING and billing the owner for accomplishing nothing.

Well how high in the boat could they have mounted it, we checked all of the center bilges all of the way to the bow thruster. We didn't even see the wire to it anywhere. It's supposed to be mounted at waterline.......and the wire runs through the engine room chase at eye level, so the ceilings of the lower level were the next logical place to look, even to just see where the wire runs.

The suction cups do not work on the wood floor because it is too grainy. We've tried 3 different brands, none of them stick to it. They could've put the little socket thing in them like Sunseeker and Princess do that the push button handle thing goes into the 5/16" hole and pulls them right up, but that would be too logical, not to mention the panels are HEAVY.

This is the compass for the JMS joystick. The wire starts port side of engine room near the front bulkhead where the ZF computers are mounted (plugs into port computer I believe), then goes in a chase at almost E.R. ceiling height on port side, We then took apart master head area and found the chase but can't find the wire in it, but wires bundled tight, but did not see it there. It is a distinct darker grey colored thick wire. All of the Sanlorenzo wiring is a very very light grey, so should stand out. It's a Maretron compass that measures 3 1/4" x 3 1/4" and 2" thick and has a distinct medium grey wiring color. Sanlorenzo ordered it with 100' of wire so it could be mounted **** near anywhere in the boat.

I believe I've checked under the midship beds, but I'll check again. We could run a new wire from port engine room (ZF computer) to the center bilge forward of the master, and that creates some challenges due to poor access to run the wire, AND we'd have to seatrial the boat and setup ALL parameters of the joystick operation(which takes hours) because the compass would now be in a different location (fore to aft).

I don't understand why these builders can't make a decent owners manual or have the info at the factory......One call to a Hatteras, Westport, Viking, Princess, Sunseeker, Searay, or even Carver dealer and you'd have the answer of the EXACT location within minutes. YET, the Italians can't do that because the sub contract half of the boats build to various subcontractors (usually the cheapest) who install the hardware anywhere they please and none of them follow the build plan and none of the builders care that they don't.

If you were to walk around the boat with a magnet, would it set the AP in fits ?

But that wasn't the factory that said. It was San Lorenzo in FL.

I laughed on your part of it just giving Capt J more billing hours and I know how he hates things that add what he feels are unnecessary costs. There are some who are fine if they go to meet someone at a scheduled time and the others show up two hours late so they get to bill two hours more. Capt J absolutely hates that. He very much feels and acts like a customer which benefits his customers but adds to his stress.

You could open the wire bundles and re-bundle them as you go. PITA but probably wouldn't take 12 hours.

Nope, apparently SL US was told so from Italy, according to post #11.
All still subject to actually finding where the thing is, anyhow.
My bet remains on somewhere in a midship cabin bilge.

It took 12 hours just to access the few wiring bundles that we could. And, of the ones we could, you can almost reach them with one hand. Plus zip tied tight in plastic channels. Access is REALLY poor to them. They built the interior around the rest of the boat.

Gotta love it. Give me an old Hat any day. Or if new, a quality build not just a pretty one. I remember when my boss first got the Viking (Princess) and I got a look at it's manual. Fell in love. Between this, the floor panels and having this thing so well hidden. Good luck.

You have the solution, Chesapeake46. There should be a heading readout/display somewhere - this reading should go nuts or at least move off correct if you move a strong magnet to the vicinity of the compass. Outrageously strong magnets are available now at Lowe's/Home Depot - even stronger ones are available on-line. Might want to mount the magnet on a stick.
