If you go to jarrett bay be very careful and get detailed quote AND completion date.

why do you say that? Personal experience or scuttlebutt? I always like to hear the basis of an opinion good or bad.

Keep us up to date. That could be an option for me coming from Beaufort, particular if they know Posts. I'll need the same cockpit and gunwale spray you are getting a year from now, in addition to my hull this year.

    Are you there now?

BTW, how likely is it that a NY guy with the nickname Beau, and a boat named Bodacious winds up in Beaufort searching for a paint job....

Multiple captains have warned me about cost over runs and not putting manpower on the boat. One captain said he'd never go back, ever. I only use Merritt's, LMC and spencer's. Don't have any bad experiences from those yards. I trust the captains I've spoken with.

Their reputation for doing quality work is good, but we pulled a nearly $100K job from them when we waited and waited for work to begin. Get a completion date and state "time is of the essence" on the contract and you should be fine. And you won't be the first boater from NY to have your painting done there. Good weather and good workers.

It actually handles and rides quite well. In a VERY closed spaced 3-4' right on the bow, it pounded a little bit, but that was after dumping the forward tank and aft tank full, other than that rode fine. However, it even seems to prefer the forward fuel tank stays full until the aft fuel tank gets to 1/3 before transferring it.

Do you know how much fuel each tank holds. I couldn't find the info anywhere other than total fuel capacity 870 gallons. I "THINK" forward is 200 gallons and aft 570, does anyone know for certain?

I like/prefer Awlcraft 2000 on the hull (for repairability) and standard Awlgrip on the topsides.

Question on paint colors. Many of you may recall the blue caste Buddy Davis had to it whites. I'm looking for a little heavier blue than that for my hull, but not what I see as available on the color charts. In the old day, if you wanted to lighten a color you added a proportional amount of white. Is that primitive but effective method still used? Or does it require the creation of an algorithm and a chemist??

With Awlgrip, you can do it on a computerized paint mixing machine and have a repeatable mix, everytime. 17,000 colors to choose from and the computer mixes it. Some of the more volume painters can mix the colors right at their location. I'm guessing some old school guys still mix their colors the old fashioned way, but several issues with that......have to mix ALL of the paint for the entire boat at the same time.....etc. etc....... not easily repeatable.

Alot of the NC builders are using Alexseal paints. Have you looked into their colors, although color wise they are probably very close

I know enough about paints to get into trouble. Maybe not even that. I'm certain the reputable painter I ultimately select will have the knowledge you folks have and get me thru it. Thx. I do see Alexseal popping up alot. I believe that's what Jarret Bay prefers.

Enjoy this glorious weather for you guys here in the NE. I'm sitting in CT atop 2 motors undressed to the open cylinders. Having my 2000 hour service done along with valves and heads and some other odds and ends. Looking for another 20+ years of service.

We sold Buddy Davis 508U Dupont Imron which was an off white , the blue tone white may have been 817u. 817u was a stock color white for all GM autos in the 70,80 and nineties .

If you find a yard which is used to painting with Alexeseal, I would not have them paint with Awlgrip or make an Awlgrip painter paint with Alexseal.
I have never seen an invisible Awlgrip repair job, so I like CaptJā€™s suggestion of Awlcraft 2000 for the hull, and Awlgrip for the House.
Am I correct in thinking Alexseal is somewhere between the stiffness of Awlcraft 2000 and Awlgrip, but closer to Awlcraft for repair ability?
    Best,

Spencer and bayliss are couple miles from each other in Wanchese both top tier builders. Look at either companies boats, they can fair and paint with the best of them. Bayliss will cost more. Ask how many coats, fairing included and do they wet sand, polish afterwards. That makes the difference between a good or great paint job. Spencer will paint a commercial shrimp boat or $10 million sporty. You tell them how crazy you want to get with a mirror finish.
