    BUYER BEWARE !!!!!! So I went to New York with a good friend who is interested in purchasing this 2005 /46 Ocean boat looked clean very low hours on cat C 12s broker stated meticulously maintained so my friend has scheduled a full marine survey and also a full survey from caterpillar the broker was actually selling the boat for her son which we later find out after she had denied any connection with the owner and stated the boat is perfect if anything needs to be corrected we will adjust it the marine survey came back with a few discrepancies not so much the case with the caterpillar surveys they stated to make the boat seaworthy for 10 hour trip it would require 20 k in work and there were no maintaince records ever Caterpillar recommends that the heat exchange is an after cause be serviced or replaced that was an hours or six years amongst all the things that should’ve been done this would’ve cost an additional $36,000 the broker at that point said they would do nothing as far as price adjustment and probably figured my friend was into surveys for over $4500 and he would buy it well he didn’t I am sharing this info with anyone possibly interested in buying this boat from Pennybridge Marine in New York please be very cautious if anybody would like they can PM me for exact details and documentation of this whole deal needless to say he did not buy the boat please if someone is interested please be careful

    On any high HP diesel Sport Fisher you should understand even before a survey that after coolers and heat exchangers will probably need service. Best case scenario it will be in a year or two or three maybe. Worst case right away. But maintenance is constant. And it’s all relative to what you are paying for the boat. The Seller should be able to tell you they are due for service or here’s the receipts for when they were done last year. Go on a boat ride before you spend a few thousand dollars on a mechanic. You can see if the motors hold temp or if they smoke etc.

    You are never going to escape service and maintenance expense. You pay the seller a higher price if he did it. Or a lower price if you have to do it after purchase. Boat shoppers love to ask about bottom paint, whether it’s new or a couple of years old. It’s like asking someone if they took a shower yesterday. What’s the difference? You are still going to have to take one tomorrow.

    By the way don't take the Seller's mom/broker's word for anything. If you are still interested in closing the deal at a reduced price ask for a survey allowance and put it it writing. Conversationally, Sellers find it trivially easy to say no to price concessions. Submit in writing a conditional acceptance with your adjusted price and get a response directly from the Seller.

    Understand that brokers represent the seller. He/she has to make a sale to make money. Take what they say with a grain of salt. Before going through the expense of a survey you should check the boat with someone knowledgeable, preferably sea trialing. When my boss bought Valhalla we looked over around a dozen boats that the brokers and pictures showed as being great. They weren't. It was bad enough that he went through the expense of sending us around the country. Could you imagine if he had paid a surveyor with each? Mind you that's not to say all or even most brokers are crooked. Just understand who they're working for and that no sale equals no money.

    I'm confused. The OP stated the boat needed 20k just to make it seaworthy but I don't see any of those issues mentioned. CAT always recommends the aftercooler replacement, this is general and easily obtained knowledge with lots of discussions and opinions about if this is necessary. But surely this was not what was keeping the boat at the dock? What else was needed?

    Separately, the broker should have disclosed her relationship to the seller. But otherwise, if you are looking for a broker to tell you everything about a boat, you should not be buying a used boat.

    Actually the OP stated $20K of neglected maintenance just to make the boat capable of a 10 hour cruise, $36K of work to make the motors right. More important was no maintenance records and an obvious failure to do needed maintenance, and the lie that the price would be adjusted to include making it seaworthy. Sounds like the broker crossed the line between puffing and lying on several issues. No the OP didn't share what the other $16K in motor work needed was nor what else came up in the survey, but I think he got the message across about this boat and broker.

    We just pulled C-12 original aftercoolers on a 2006 Sunseeker. 14 years running 12 months a year in salt water. They looked like they just came out of the box. We replaced them anyway. $12K parts and service.

    Running is the key. Cooling systems don’t do well sitting at the dock - and lots of brokerage boats have been.

    Another gentleman from Maryland who is interested in that boat had contacted myself and my body who is going to buy it and my buddy gave him the cat surveys but he paid for his own marine survey in New York they had agreed on a price because he was trading in a boat the owner from the marina went down and looked at his boat told him if he wanted to trade his boat for that 46 they were only going to give him so much he was gonna drive up to New York and pay for a complete survey out of his own pocket needless to say deal fell through!!!!!!!!!

    I hate that you had to spend the money to find that out, I had a verbal agreement on a boat with 3406e's and when I spoke with a CAT surveyor he immediately educated me on the maintenance and replacement of the aftercoolers and that saved me a large survey expense. I offered to split the cost of the aftercoolers and new adapter brackets, but the seller refused that offer. If it would have been time for replacement, I would have went forward and tried to negotiate, but considering per CAT recommendations they were over 10 years past their life, I just couldn't pay for that. I haven't been able to get really excited about anything since, hopefully that will change soon. Good Luck on your search.
