I have not received any official announcement but my source is pretty dependable. The shows have been sending out broadcast emails twice a week as recently as Tuesday selling tickets.

With any shows, conventions etc. They seem to be booking vendors and selling tickets until such time as the municipalities shut them down. I'm sure everybody involved with FLIBS will be watching to see how many show up at Annapolis and whether Maryland pulls the plug at the last minute since most municipalities are adjusting their distancing rules week to week. Annapolis is probably watching what happens at Norwalk, and Javits is watching them all (although I'll be amazed if that one goes off since it's indoors and in NY). If they cancel refund policies for tickets and vendors could be interesting. It's all about money. They make nothing if they don't sell the show, but if they cancel once planned there could be a lot of expenses with no way to recoup except to refuse (or defer) refunds.
The Sturgis MC rally went off last week. After seeing all the old men packed together with no masks I expect some great used HD estate sales next spring.

The city of Annapolis cancelled them.

Annapolis Boat Shows had been working on a plan for health protocols to keep the shows going, but the City of Annapolis says “in recent meetings between the City and the Health Department, it was determined that there is not a way to create the necessary conditions to maintain public health and safety.”

They were probably just waiting for the city to cancel instead of making the decision themselves... it shifts blame, and therefore cost, onto someone else.

It would be interesting to know how many of the builders and brokers had questioned things or backed out and how much money they'd collected and when, or if, they'll return it. I don't doubt at all that they'd also reached the conclusion it shouldn't be held, but let the city be the bad guy.

Vendors booked their spots a long time ago and people bought tickets, but the promoters laid out for advertising, permits, etc. The HEALS Act is going to make it very hard for anyone to get refunds or even to sue for them. The act was designed to keep people from suing businesses when they get sick because businesses open too early and infect their patrons or force their employees to work and risk infection, but I think we'll be seeing a lot of business vs business suits for years to come. It could have interesting effects on vendor contracts going forward.

Only decent solution is negotiated compromise. Otherwise you lose a relationship that both need. Mall owners have done a great job and only issues have been a few tenants who decided to pay nothing. Most contracts were not written in a way to really handle this and even those that were, enforcing the contract as written just isn't equitable.

Yep. Only question in these uncertain financial times is how tight the grip on the money is since there's very little legal recourse now. As more shows get cancelled the up front money may be all there is for the promoters. Could be a matter of go out now with money in their pockets or shut the doors next year broke. It'll be interesting. Will ethics and forward thinking win out over greed and desperation?

The Annapolis Capital has has several articles and opinions regarding the economic impact of the show. We are not cancelling the 2018 show. This is 2020 where a large percentage of people will not travel, displays will be down and more locals will stay away than attend. I wonder if the show owners would have lost money had the show happened? One thing certain the economic impact would be 1/3 of previous years at best.

We have no idea how many exhibitors weren't going to show, or how few buying customers. Plus all the inconvenience to the regular marina customers and hardship on them to move their boats. The only advantage in having it for the show company is then it takes away the arguments for refunds to both exhibitors and attendees. That's why they wanted to go on.

As to economic impact, I doubt there is much, not compared to all the other things being experienced. Restaurants couldn't benefit as normal or bars. People who would have come wouldn't have been out shopping.

No we do not but the show would know exactly how far there numbers were off just 6 weeks before showtime.

What a shame, I used to love the sailboat show, .....and I participated in it for a number of years as a vendor.

I believe I first visited this show only 2 years after it was started.
